ELOY -- Police were called to investigate whether Eloy's Main Street Park was actually Jurassic Park last week.

During the city’s “Day of the Dinosaurs” children’s activity, a concerned citizen called Eloy police to report dinosaurs were in the park.

Yes, really.

According to an audio file provided by the Eloy Police Department, officers fielded a call Friday from a woman asking if there were dinosaurs in the park.

“’Yes, there are,’” the operator relayed to the caller, who then got the information about the event for the caller.

“’Are they real?’” came the response.

The operator assured the caller that live dinosaurs weren’t roaming the park. The caller, for her part, agreed that it couldn’t be possible and explained she was checking because she doubted a brother’s dino-knowledge when he told her they were real.

The event was put on by the Eloy Parks and Recreation Department.

“It actually happens more than you’d think,” said Greg McGrew, owner of Dino Crew Entertainment that provided the human-operated dinosaurs for the Eloy event. “You’d be amazed.”

McGrew said he wasn’t aware that Eloy police had been called but said that isn’t the worst he’s heard.

“My favorite was when animal control was called,” he laughed.

Yes, animal control. He said he was doing an event at a Phoenix-area park when the officer walked up.

“They started laughing once they got closer,” McGrew said.

Every few months McGrew gets calls from people who are impressed his company has resurrected — and tamed — dinosaurs. In reality, however, the dinosaurs are made of a silicone rubber and foam exterior over a wire frame. The insides are hollow and are operated by humans who use cameras and a screen to interact with audiences.

The large dinosaurs stand 7 feet tall and are about as long as a car, McGrew said. And the dinosaurs even have babies: hand puppets that also interact with audiences.

Like all large animals, they’re transported in cages.

McGrew started his dino rental company three years ago and said the dinosaurs have been everywhere from backyard parties to Chase Field to a Mercedes commercial at Warner Brothers Studios.

“We’re having fun with it,” McGrew said.
