Boys at a top boarding school in the UK will be allowed to wear skirts if they want to, the headteacher has confirmed.

Richard Maloney, head at Uppingham School in Rutland, said the school would be sympathetic to any male pupils who want to wear the skirts.

He told the Sunday Times: ‘I would hope that any pupil could come to me and say, “This is who we are, this is how we wish to express ourselves. We want to wear these clothes”, and we would probably allow that.’

He said one pupil at the mixed £36,000-a-year school had worn a skirt during an inclusivity week at the school last year to make a statement.

At the school, boys wear trousers, shirts and jumpers, while girls wear skirts, shirts and jumpers.

TV doctor Christian Jessen, actor Stephen Fry and TV chef Rick Stein are among Uppingham School’s former pupils.

Dr Jessen, who spent three years at the school, said he would probably have worn a skirt if he had the choice.

He said gender-neutral uniforms would help tackle gender stereotypes.

It comes as other schools in the UK have started announcing new gender neutral uniform polices.

One of these schools is Cavendish Road primary school in Didsbury, Greater Manchester.

Headteacher Janet Marland told The Guardian last year: ‘We felt that in this day and age it was inappropriate to designate certain clothing items to one gender. We wanted our boys and girls to know they had the same rights.’

Wait, didn't the boy wear the skirt to school because it was hot and he wasn't allowed shorts? Or was that a different story?
