A mother and her boyfriend have been jailed for locking an eight-year-old boy in a metal shipping container for days at a time.
The child, who cannot be identified, was starved and beaten by the pair and his uncle, and said that he thought he would be ‘kept there forever’.
Police raised the property in New South Wales, Australia, in December 2015 on suspicion of cannabis production.
The single-storey home was surrounded by shipping containers, and it was in one of these that police found the young boy.
There was a small desk, paint tins and a soiled mattress inside the 2.4m by 2m enclosure with no ventilation.

They wouldn’t let him use a toilet, and when he urinated
or defecated in the corner, they beat him.
The boy had abrasions, scabs, callouses, burns and a broken front tooth, reports the Morning Bulletin.
Even worse, he had open sores and dirty dressings around his ankles, and was so malnourished his bones lacked density and his muscles had no bulk.
He had no food, a small amount of water, and the floor was covered in ant powder.
They would lock him in there for days at a time and refuse to let him use the toilet.
When he urinated or defecated in the corner, they beat him.

The boy said that he felt like an animals being forced to lice in the horrific conditions
‘I felt like an animal, I thought that I would be kept there forever,’ the boy wrote in a victim impact statement to District Court judge Leonie Flannery almost two years later.
‘It was terrible being in the shipping container. I felt sad and lonely… I felt very scared. Now sometimes it’s like everything in my mind is dead.’
His mother’s boyfriend told police he had treated him like this as a punishment for ‘acting inappropropriately’ to another boy.
The mother also lived with her other children, aged 10, three, and 18 months.
On one side a black wooden deck and outdoor spa hid the doors to an underground bunker.

The boyfriend, a 30-year-old man, was sentenced to a maximum of six and half years with a non-parole period of four years.
For her part in the crime, the boy’s mother received three years and five months, with a non-parole period of two years and five months. She will soon be eligible for parole.
Her brother was sentenced to two years and three months with a minimum period of two years.
