An unknown number of people are injured from a shooting this morning at Santa Fe High School near Galveston, Texas, according to the Santa Fe Independent School District.

The incident has since been contained. Law enforcement is working to secure the building and move students to another location, the district said.

The assistant principal told ABC station KTRK in Houston that a suspect was in custody.

Witnesses said a shooting took place in an art class, KTRK reported.

One student told KTRK she was in first period when the fire alarms went off. Students were told to evacuate and staff members instructed them to run across the street and hide.

The University of Texas Medical Branch is receiving an unknown number of patients, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police cars were seen swarming the scene. Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said sheriff's county deputies are headed to the scene to help.

At least eight people have been killed in a Texas high school shooting Friday, FOX 26 reported. The suspected shooter was taken into custody and the active shooter situation was said to be over.

Police officers responded to Santa Fe High School around 8 a.m. CDT after reports that a shooter opened fire inside. The gunman appears to be a student, KTRK reports, citing a law enforcement official. Further details of the incident were not immediately available.

"Details will be released as we receive updated information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location," the school district said in a statement.

Galveston County Sheriff's Maj. Douglas Hudson said units responded to reports of shots fired. Witnesses say a gunman opened fire inside an art class during first period. A student in the class told KTRK she witnessed at least one girl being shot.

"We thought it was a fire drill at first but really, the teacher said, 'Start running,'" the student told the news station.

Two seniors at the school told KHOU 11 their friend pulled the fire alarm after spotting the shooter and urged other students to run. They also said they saw an injured female student.

“Now I am worried about everyone else,” one student commented. “ I don’t even want to go to graduation now.”

Authorities have not yet confirmed these accounts.

President Trump tweeted Friday regarding the shooting stating, "School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!"

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz also tweeted regarding the shooting.

“Heidi and I are keeping all the students and faculty at Santa Fe High School in our prayers this morning, along with all first responders on the scene. Please be safe and heed warnings from local officials," he said.

Aerial footage from the scene showed students standing in a grassy field while officers inspected their backpacks. At least three life-flight helicopters landed at the school.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said it was also on the scene. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted early Friday that he arrived at the school to assist officers with the Galveston County Sheriff Office.

Santa Fe is a city of about 13,000 residents, located 30 miles southeast of Houston.

Unfortunately not. Because he is 17 he cannot be executed. In 2005, the Supreme Court ruled that any criminal that committed their crimes while under the age of 18 cannot be executed, they considered it to be 'cruel and unusual punishment' and therefore against the Constitution's 8th Amendment:

New details emerged Friday night about the Santa Fe High School shooting suspect, who admitted to opening fire and told why he avoided shooting certain students, according to a probable cause affidavit and complaint that identified charges against him.

The suspect, Dimitrios Pagourtzis Jr., 17, was charged with capital murder of multiple persons and aggravated assault against a public servant, according to the document.

Pagourtzis “surrendered” to authorities after coming out of an art classroom at the school, the document said, and was brought to the Santa Fe Police Department where he was advised of “and later waived his Miranda Warning.”

The suspect was then interviewed and "he gave a statement admitting to shooting multiple people inside” the high school “with the intent on killing people,” the document said. Pagourtzis also said "he did not shoot students he did like so he could have his story told,” according to the document.

Pagourtzis also said he wore a trench coat and carried a Remington 870 shotgun and a .38 caliber pistol, according to the document.

Hours after the deadly shooting that left at least 10 people dead unfolded, hundreds of mourners gathered for a vigil held in honor of the victims.

Among those in attendance were Dr. Leigh Wall, the superintendent of Santa Fe Independent School District, Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. Greg Abbott.

“No child, no parent, no student, no community should ever have to go through this again,” Abbott said, adding that he and the entire state were “not here today and gone tomorrow,” but would remain until “normalcy,” as well as “safety is returned to your schools.”

He also talked about his own experiences with challenges in life, speaking about the accident that caused him to need a wheelchair.

“I know the anguish so many families are facing today,” Abbott said. “What allowed me to rise up from having my life broken in half, is the very same thing that will repair and restore the fractured families today.”

Cruz took the podium, telling the crowd of people that “tonight, all of Texas is grieving.”

“None of us knows why there’s evil in the world,” Cruz said. “But this community has seen it – has seen the face of unmitigated evil. Has seen the face of hatred but let me encourage you, in spite of that evil, the community has also seen strength. This community has also seen love. This community has also seen courage.”

Every school in the Santa Fe Independent School District will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, according to a Facebook post from the district. They added that more school counselors and other resources will be available because they know “students and staff are going to need counseling to help them grieve” and “need an outlet to share their fears and concerns.”

Couldn't agree more. Everyone still remembers the names Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, their faces are still everywhere, they did get hugely famous. We fucked up, but nobody has learned from it...

We all believe in freedom of the press so it's not on the government to tell these outlets what to do, I don't think. There needs to be a movement from the people imploring news outlets not to celebrate the killers, no more documentaries about them or 60 Minutes pieces about their lives. Show them in their orange jump suits at their arraignment, and again at their execution.

I agree with Lance but here's an addition idea: Charge the parents of the shooter. The kid was 17. The guns belonged to his father. How did the kid get a hold of them? There was clearly something wrong the kid and nobody was doing anything about it. Nobody was paying attention. It's a parent's responsibility to know where their kid's at, who they're hanging with, what they're getting up to, how they're feeling, constantly for at least the first 18 years of that kid's life. To let the kid get this far, it's obvious that the parents didn't give a shit, didn't engage the kid the way they should have. I don't know if this kid was getting bullied at school. By all accounts he was a big football player, so I doubt anybody was really bullying him, unless it was the coaches or teachers doing the bullying. But the underlying problem seems to be the same story as the Parkland shooting and Columbine: Nobody gave a shit. Nobody paid attention. People knew something was wrong but nobody did anything about it. With Parkland, the whole community should be indicted. Even the kids. They bullied the shooter his entire life. The whole fucking community is responsible for that mess. Fuck them. Charge them all.

So start by charging the parents. They're supposed to give a shit. They're supposed to mold their kids' lives. They're the front lines. They failed in this case, and in Parkland, and in Columbine. Take the kid's gloves off. Charge the parents.

It's sad that I think that there should be a law that explicitly says that if you're a legal guardian of a child, then you have a legal responsibility to give a shit about your kid's development, about their life. It's seriously sad that I feel this way. But I do. If you got a kid and that kid gets in trouble, then fuck you, you too get charged with the crime that the kid committed.

I guarantee that if a law like this was passed and enforced, the school shootings would stop, and gang-related crimes would probably drop in time as well.

I agree, there would need to be an onus on the prosecution to prove the parents ignored warning signs and/or handled firearms irresponsibly I think, but if they could I'm with DGX that they should be held criminally responsible too.

The last Florida shooting was an interesting one. I believe the boy's mother had died so he stopped going to therapy, and people in the system knew the kid had all the warning signs, but weren't empowered to do anything about it. I know that saying the mental health system is criminally underpowered and underfunded is obvious at this point, but people get so wrapped up in debating gun laws that this point gets ignored too.
