A Portsmouth man molested a 2-year-old boy on camera in 2016, then posted the photos on the internet, according to court documents.
The images were all watermarked with one of his screen names and the word “copyright.”
Dashawn Webster was arrested Friday after confessing to a federal investigator. He made his initial appearance later that afternoon in U.S. District Court.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth “Beth” Yusi declined to comment, as did his defense attorney, Assistant Public Defender Keith Kimball.
The charges against Webster, 22, stem from two separate investigations into unspecified websites that distributed child porn, one led by Interpol and one led by Homeland Security Investigations based in Boston.
HSI agents recovered a thumb drive from a suspect in another case that included 17 images of a prepubescent boy that appeared to be “homemade,” according to court documents. All were in a folder labeled with a specific screen name, and all of the images were watermarked with the same screen name.
Further investigation led agents to five videos of a man engaging in sex acts with a young boy, documents said.
Agents determined the same person was using multiple screen names on a variety of websites that deal in child pornography. With the help of Cox Communications, investigators linked posts from one of those screen names to Webster’s old address on Rex Avenue in Portsmouth.
Agents also linked another email address associated with one of the screen names to that address.
Investigators determined Webster had moved next door. A Portsmouth police sergeant conducted a “ruse interview” Monday regarding a missing person. The sergeant spoke with Webster and saw he was babysitting two boys at the time.
A Homeland Security Investigations agent served a search warrant Friday morning at the house. In an interview, Webster confessed to making the child pornography with the watermarks in November 2016. A review of Webster’s electronic media uncovered numerous images of child pornography as well.
