A MAN was asked to leave a Lidl after he strolled in with his pet sheep ‘Chops’ on a lead and urged shoppers not to buy lamb products.

But he whacked a store security worker with his fists and a metal pole, a court heard today.

Andrew Meneice, 33, was charged with two counts of assault, being disorderly and resisting a police officer over the incident in his home town of Portrush, Co Antrim, last July.

He pleaded guilty to resisting the police officer but contested the other three raps.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court yesterday, he was found guilty of disorder and one assault.

The other assault was dismissed.

Animal lover Meneice — who also has a pony, goat, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats — was jailed for four months, but released on €560 bail pending appeal.

He was also banned from taking Chops to any retail premises other than a mart for two years.

Speaking afterwards, Meneice revealed he gave up eating lamb after he fostered Chops.

And he told how he adores animals so much because “I just get on better with them”.

Regarding the Lidl incident, he said he’d been boozing while on medication and admitted he shouldn’t have done it.

But Meneice also pointed out: “Chops didn’t even go to the toilet in the place.”

District Judge Liam McNally told him: “You paraded around with a sheep. You’d no right to be in there with the sheep.”

The judge said Chops nibbled at food in the store as staff “made reasonable efforts to get you to leave”.

But the court heard that Meneice then hit an employee with his fists and a metal pole.

The judge declared: “That’s a situation which this court will not tolerate.”
