The government wants the army to be ready to deliver medicines, food and fuel to communities in the case of a no deal Brexit.

Helicopters and army trucks will be used to transport supplies up and down the country and will also be on hand to deal with disruption at Britain’s ports.

A minister told the Sunday Times the government is currently drawing up detailed plans for the prospect of a no deal Brexit.

The minister said: ‘There is a lot of civil contingency planning around the prospect of no deal.

‘That’s not frightening the horses, that’s just being utterly realistic.’

Labour MP David Lammy tweeted about the prospect of the army on the streets.

He said: ‘God, help us. This is not coming from Remainers. This is not project fear.

‘Pro-Brexit ministers are drawing up blueprints for the army to deliver food, fuel and medicine if we leave the EU with no deal.

‘We have a duty to prevent this self-immolation.’

This week it was confirmed the government is stockpiling drugs and food as Theresa May said the preparations are ‘sensible’ and people should take ‘comfort’ from Whitehall’s contingency planning.

Last month’s Chequers deal has been panned by grassroots Tories who are worried about Mrs May’s vision of Brexit.

The prime minister’s own Maidenhead Conservative Association warned her not to concede any more ground to the EU.

Richard Kellaway told The Daily Telegraph: ‘If it (the Chequers deal) were to be diluted it would ultimately not be acceptable.’
