DUBLIN Zoo has announced the birth of a male baby oryx – which are extinct in the wild.

The new arrival was born on Wednesday July 25, weighing about 25kg and bringing Dublin Zoo’s oryx herd to a total of seven.

The birth of the scimitar-horned baby oryx is a very rare arrival as the species is extinct in the wild.

They were once widespread across northern Africa, but due to overhunting, habitat loss and competition with domestic livestock, they have gradually disappeared from the wild.

The species have now been classified as extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as there has been no definitive evidence of their presence in the wild since the early 1990’s.

However, Dublin Zoo houses a group of the species and has been financially supporting the reintroduction of programme for the scimitar-horned oryx in Tunisia since 2013.

Through these conservation breeding programmes, zoo-bred oryx are slowly being reintroduced into semi-wild areas in four national parks across Tunisia with over 200 introduced so far.

Commenting on Dublin Zoo’s birth, team leader Helen Clarke-Bennet said: “We are so pleased to welcome our newest addition to the scimitar-horned oryx herd and recognise the impact this birth makes on the conservation efforts being made to protect this species.

“Both mother and calf are doing extremely well – we are delighted to report he was up and running about just one hour after birth!”

This comes after the popular Phoenix Park attraction welcomed three California sea lion pups back in June.

The latest additions, which include one male and two females, are the offspring of father Niko and proud mums Florence, Seanna and Cassie.

Team leader Eddie O’Brien said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome three births in just two weeks. I’m delighted to say that the new mums and their young are doing very well.

“Generally speaking, sea lion pups tend to spend their first few days on land bonding with their mums before swimming lessons commence. While each mum is teaching her pup, she will swim beneath it to keep it afloat and guide it through the water.”

And a male gorilla sent animal lovers wild as he joined the Dublin Zoo troop back in May.
