The EU could make a ‘massive miscalculation’ if it thinks the UK is not ready to walk away from Brexit talks with no deal, former Brexit Secretary David Davis said.

But Mr Davis said that both the EU and the British Parliament are keen to strike a deal during ongoing Brexit talks.

His comments came after International Trade Secretary Liam Fox assessed the probability of ‘no deal’ as ’60-40′.

Mr Davis spent months negotiating with the EU’s Michel Barnier before quitting over Theresa May’s Chequers plan.

The two sides hope to reach a deal as soon as October, which would give MPs time to scrutinise it.

Mr Davis told the Daily Telegraph: ‘This has great scope for being a massive miscalculation on the part of the EU that could end up with no deal by accident.

‘It’s certainly not the intention of the EU to have a no-deal Brexit but they are misjudging us at the moment. The UK Parliament does not want no deal but it’s certainly not going to be pushed around by the European Parliament.

‘I’ve always thought that no deal is better than a bad deal and while there will be border issues and so on… it would give us more freedom.

‘I’m still of the view that we have got two things on our side – we have got our own currency and we are masters of our own destiny in a way that EU member countries are not.’

Government sources have suggested that the EU’s own Lisbon Treaty could legally require Brussels to work towards a deal, the Telegraph reported.

Article 8 of the treaty states that the EU must ‘develop a special relationship with neighbouring countries, aiming to establish an area of prosperity and good neighbourliness, founded on the values of the Union and characterised by close and peaceful relations based on cooperation’.

Mr Davis said: ‘The Lisbon Treaty requires them to come up with a workable arrangement and that’s certainly not the description of their behaviour at the moment.’

The prime minister has met France’s Emmanuel Macron for talks with ministers being dispatched across Europe as part of a charm offensive, while avoiding European Commission bureaucrats.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland told BBC Radio 4’s Westminster Hour the Government believes the leaders of the 27 EU states will play a more significant role going forward.

He added: ‘The Government’s policy is to get a deal and that chimes entirely with what I think is in the best interests of our country.’

I personally wouldn't want to be part of a union where not everyone pays their fair share... You guys have your own currency and have been self supportive for 2000 years, why get mixed up with that riff-raff on the other side of the channel?

lost in melb.

You'll be fine either way. Perhaps Britain needs a challenge... to jerk it out of its post-Victorian-era welfare state lethargy :dunno:

Welfare will become more common not less.

And this cunt Davis, the idiotic fuckwitted cunt can take a running leap.
He quit his fucking job, as he can't do it, it was his job to negotiate a deal, and he quit.
Cunt shouldn't be allowed to speak on the topic ever again.
