Durham University has been forced to reschedule its planned 8am lectures following protests from students and staff.

According to Durham student paper Palatinate, four modules in the business and law departments would have been taught at the earlier time, but have now been rearranged.

The paper reported they had been met with an outcry from staff and student groups, including the Durham Students with Disabilities Association and the Students’ Union.

Many suggested the earlier lectures came as a result of timetabling issues caused by controversial expansion plans.

Durham University has said it hopes to increase its enrolment from 17,500 to 21,500 students by 2027.

Students said they were worried about the impact of the early lectures on those who live outside Durham, who have children or other family commitments, or who suffer from illnesses and disabilities.

Durham Students’ Union president George Walker said the reversal was ‘great news – but not just because students don’t have to get up as early’.

He said: ‘Great news for student attainment and making education accessible to all students – especially those with disabilities and caring responsibilities.’

Professor Alan Houston, the university’s pro-vice-chancellor for education, said: ‘Durham’s preliminary timetable for 2018-19 included four modules in Business and Law whose lectures were to be taught at 8am.

‘Both students and staff expressed concern at this possibility.

‘We have listened and responded. Working closely with students and departments, the Student Registry explored all alternatives.

‘Thanks to their hard work, I am pleased to report that there will be no 8am lectures scheduled next academic year.’

He added that a new teaching and learning centre, set to open next September, would provide additional lecture space to help relieve the pressure on the timetable.

I hated 8 am classes in college. And if I ever complained, I got the biggest tongue-lashing from whatever professor about responsibility and how the world was gonna chew me up and spit me out if I didn't get my shit straight. I learned very quickly to just keep my mouth shut and show up.

I had a professor in an 8 am class stop his lecture one day when I walked in late. He said "Ah, Mr. XXX, what a pleasure for you to join us. And it's not even test day!"

You're right, how times have changed.

I hated 8am classes, but if you just sucked it up and crammed all your classes into four days you could easily have a 3-day weekend all throughout college  It was awesome.
