A mother and daughter are fighting for their lives in hospital following a ‘horrific’ hammer attack in broad daylight in south east London, police said.
Witnesses described how one of the victims’ face was ‘hanging off’ after the shocking unprovoked attack in Greenwich.
On Sunday evening, Scotland Yard said that 27-year-old Joe Xuereb has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
In a statement, officers said a woman followed the suspect in her car until police detained him.
He was arrested at 7.35pm in Old Farm Avenue, Sidcup.
A hammer was found at the scene where the women, aged 30 and 64, were critically hurt at 12.10pm on Sunday.
A witness, who did not want to be named, described how a man ‘calmly cycled away from the scene’ after launching the attack.
She said: ‘It was horrific. Her face was hanging off, I was trying to put her face back together.

‘They were definitely life-changing injuries. She was hit in the face and the head, and the other woman was hit in the head. I’m worried they won’t survive.
‘One of the women was choking on her own blood so we sat her up. She was in an out of consciousness.
‘I feel sick, if you saw it on telly you’d turn it off.’
Another witness described seeing a man ‘swinging his hammer’ as blood poured from the heads of the victims.
The two women are believed to not live locally, and were visiting friends in the area.
