A survivor of last year's mass shooting in Las Vegas is turning tragedy into triumph by becoming a police officer in Oregon.

Lauren Card was sworn in on Monday as an officer in the city of Springfield.

She told The Register-Guard that her decision to serve and protect was inspired by the shooting, citing the relief she felt upon seeing officers amid the chaos.

"I want to be that person for someone else in that situation," Card said.

Card, 23, had attended the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival with family members when the shooting occurred.

Stephen Paddock began firing into the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 people and wounding more than 500.

The incident marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Card told Lt. Scott McKee during her hiring that she "knows what it’s like to be shot at" and that it would ultimately help her in the force.

"I don’t want this to affect me in such a negative way and let it ruin my life,” Card said. “I want to do something with this, show that you can move on."

The Register-Guard reported that Card, a graduate of Oregon State University, will attend the police academy in October.
