French fisherman were seen apparently hurling PETROL BOMBS at British fishing boats

SCALLOP Wars between British and French fishermen could provoke a response from the French army, a leading minister has said.

British fishermen have accused French crews of "terrorism" after they were set upon in a nighttime raid off Normandy last Tuesday.

French agriculture minister Stephen Travert told local CNews: “We can’t keep going on like this, we can’t keep having skirmishes like that.

“The French Navy is ready to step in if more clashes break out, as well as carrying out checks.”

French fishing chiefs hit back at Brit criticism, blaming Brexit for the dispute and accusing the British of being “looters”.

Derek Meredith, who owns two Devon scallop boats targeted in the skirmish, said: “They need to stop taking the law into their own hands. It’s terrorism.

“If we did that in this country we would be locked up as terrorists.”

Aaron Brown, who founded pro-Brexit pressure group Fishing for Leave, told France24 that the blame for the incident lay with the French.

He said: “The level of violence and intimidation pre-meditatively deployed - since there were TV crews there that had obviously been scheduled - was completely unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable from the point of view of navigation. It is also utterly hypocritical.

“For the French to kick off as they have over a few British boats exercising their right under common EU policy to fish there is complete hypocrisy."

Daily Star Online approached the MOD for comment.
