Captain Marvel has several incarnations, the one being used for the movie is the female Carol Danvers. Actually, the male one is in the movie too. Jude Law is playing him, but he's just known as Mar-Vell in this.

This movie is based on the Secret Invasion comic storyline. A group of shape shifting Kree known as Starforce infiltrate Earth. Captain Marvel is originally part of them, but she has to fight them to defend Earth from them

Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace will reprise their roles from the first Guardians of the Galaxy film as Korath the Pursuer and Ronan the Accuser. They died in the Guardians film, but this one takes place earlier than the first Guardians film does.
