A princess has been dropped from the British line to the throne after becoming Catholic.

Princess Alexandra of Hanover, a member of the royal family of Monaco, was – through her father Prince Ernst August – in the line of succession, but lost her place after she joined the Roman Catholic Church, according to French publication Point de Vue.

The 19-year-old is, however, still number 12 in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne.

Although Alexandra was christened as a Lutheran, she recently decided to follow in her mum, Princess Caroline of Monaco’s footsteps.

Princess Caroline has always been Catholic and her husband had to ask Queen Elizabeth II for permission to marry her when she was pregnant with Alexandra in 1999 – because the British monarch is head of the Church of England.

On 11 January 1999, the Queen issued a Declaration in Council: ‘My Lords, I hereby declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between His Royal Highness Prince Ernst August Albert of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg and Her Serene Highness Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite of Monaco…’

Without the Queen’s consent he would have been removed from the line until the Succession to the Crown Act 1999 came into force in 2015.

However, British law still bans Catholics, and other non-Protestants from succeeding to the throne.

The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 ended the disqualification of a person who marries a Roman Catholic from the line of succession.

George Windsor, Ear of St Andrews, who married a Catholic in 1988, was removed but regained his place as number 34, after his father the Duke of Kent following the new act.

Autumn Phillips, Peter Phillips’ wife had to renounce her Catholic faith when she married the Queen’s grandson.

Princess Alexandra, the granddaughter of Grace Kelly, was born in Austria, however, through her father she is descended from Victoria, Princess Royal.

She is the only daughter of Caroline and Ernst.

I could never be in the line of succession then.

:sad2:

I'm pretty sure that it's the lack of royal blood in your lineage that would keep you from the throne :-k

I've never done any genealogy research, but there is some English on my father's side of the family, so you never know.

And the fact that I'm Catholic. I've never done any genealogy research, but there is some English on my father's side of the family, so you never know.

Don't your parents have to be first cousins or closer to be royalty?
