A GIANT fossilised dragon nearly 10,000 metres long has been discovered in the middle of an African desert on Google Maps, conspiracy theorists claim.

The huge apparent rock formation or fossil resembling one of the mythical creatures has been spotted in the Mauritanian Desert, west Africa.

Video of the fascinating site using the Google Map tool was posted by the channel UFOmania on YouTube this week.

UFOmania said: "It looks like a fossilised dragon in the Mauritanian Desert.

"We can see the fossilised contours of the head and even one eye quite clearly.

"The size of these fossilised remains are 9,569 metres.

"As we know dragon legends exist in all the cultures scattered around the world, could this discovery be evidence that the dragons really existed?"

Dragon-like creatures have appeared in nearly all cultures around the globe for thousands of years.

One such monster appeared in Mesopotamian artwork dating between 2334 to 2154 BC.

The word "dragon" entered the English language but is derived from the Greek "drakon" which meant serpent or giant sea fish.

Some experts believe the prevalence of dragons is the manifestation of many humans' fear of snakes.

Dragons have hit popular culture again through the television show Game of Thrones.

YouTube commentators were torn on whether this could potentially be a groundbreaking discovery or conspiracy nonsense.

Another Michael Eldridge said: "No different to the white horse carved out on the chalk hills of Salisbury in the UK but on a larger scale."

However another YouTube viewer asked: "A six mile long dragon? Not sure I believe that."

And Odilo Von Steintz said: "Its two 6 000 metre long wings and its 1m long brain did not fossilise.

"Parts of that brain have been cloned and can now be found in the heads of quite a few YouTube content providers."
