Federal authorities are investigating suspicious packages addressed to the homes of Bill and Hillary Clinton in New York and the Obamas' home in Washington, D.C.

A potentially workable explosive device that was addressed to the Clintons' home in Chappaqua, New York, was found early Wednesday, a senior law enforcement official said. It is similar in construction to an explosive device found earlier this week in the home mailbox of billionaire George Soros in a nearby community.

A suspicious package addressed to the Obamas' house was also intercepted.

This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

Explosive devices addressed to Hillary Clinton's home and the house of former President Barack Obama were intercepted, and the Time Warner Center that is home to CNN in New York City was evacuated after a suspicious package was sent there, officials said.

Investigators are working to determine whether the two devices addressed to Clinton and Obama are connected to a pipe bomb found earlier this week in the home mailbox of billionaire George Soros in the community near where the Clintons live in Chappaqua, New York, multiple law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The preliminary belief is that all three devices are of similar pipe-bomb-style construction.

The New York City Police bomb squad was responding to the suspicious package inside the mail room of the Time Warner Center in Manhattan's Columbus Circle.

Sources told ABC News that the suspicious package appears to be a metal pipe with wires. Floors above and below the mail room are being evacuated.

CNN anchor Jim Sciutto was on air at the time of the evacuation, and the channel's news coverage was switched over to their offices in Washington D.C. Sciutto called in to their broadcast and said that he and hundreds of other CNN employees were standing outside, watching a "very fast-acting, quick response group" of NYPD officers responding to the scene.

The Secret Service stressed that the packages sent to Clinton or Obama did not reach them.

"The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such," the Secret Service said in a statement.

Bill and Hillary Clinton live in Westchester County north of New York City, and the Obamas in Washington, D.C.

President Trump has been briefed on the suspicious packages sent to the Clinton and Obama homes and the White House has now issued a statement forcefully condemning the "attempted violent attacks."

“We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures," Sarah Sanders says in a statement. "These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards.”

Trump's Going To Get To 'The Bottom' Of The Pipe Bombs? He Is The Bottom

President Donald Trump got a standing ovation for vowing to “get to the bottom” of at least six homemade bombs sent to prominent Democrats and news media outlets?

Seriously? President Trump is the bottom.

Maybe those attending a White House bill signing Wednesday were applauding Trump’s description of the attempted bomb attacks as “egregious conduct that is abhorrent to everything we hold dear and sacred as Americans.” Maybe they clapped in the hope that Trump finally had figured out that words -- his words — have consequences.

The bombs targeted the homes or offices of political adversaries and media outlets whom Trump has regularly reviled on the campaign trail as “enemies of the people,” “disgusting,” “criminals,” “evil,” and “low IQ individuals,” including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General Eric Holder, California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, former Florida Congresswoman and Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democratic donor George Soros and former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan, a regular commentator on CNN whom Trump has reviled as “very dishonest” and “a bad person.”

Dating back to the 2016 campaign, Trump has used incendiary rhetoric against reporters and Democrats as guaranteed applause lines in red meat rallies designed to gin up his political base. Did he think no twisted individuals would ever take his ugly words to heart? Whoever constructed those pipe bombs, the responsibility for these attacks rests just as squarely with the man whose vile and hateful speech about anyone who opposes him dishonors the Oval Office he occupies.

Only last week, in Montana, Trump praised Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte for assaulting a reporter during his campaign for Congress last year. “Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kind of — he’s my guy,” Trump said, even as the world was horrified by the still-unfolding news of the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, perhaps by agents of Saudi Arabia.

Does Trump expect Americans to take seriously his sober response to these attempted attacks — words that, not incidentally, he read from a teleprompter? “In these times, we have to unify," he said. "We have to come together and send one very clear, strong and unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.”

This from a man who urges his supporters to rough up demonstrators up at his rallies? This from a man who encourages cheers of “lock her up” about Hillary Clinton and “CNN Sucks” about the cable news network. This from a man who uses Twitter to mock reporters and media outlets as “dishonest, “Fake News,” “phony,” “sick,” “with an agenda of hate,” “phony sources,” “fabricated lies,” “DISTORTING DEMOCRACY in our country!” and “the enemy of the American People.”

The Reality TV Star presidency needs to end right now. Whatever else he does not comprehend about representative democracy, Donald Trump needs now to understand that he is president of the entirety of the United States; he is not president of his fervid followers alone.

He made no move in that direction Wednesday night in Wisconsin where he played to supporters who are warmed by his scorching speeches. He did not reach out, even with a telephone call, to citizens targeted by those bombs — two of them former presidents of the United States.

Instead, Trump characteristically made himself the victim, taking no responsibility for the dangerous effect of his vilification of the media and his political opponents. Instead, he blamed reporters for “endless hostility and false attacks and stories” and warned that no one should be compared with “historical villains,” an apparent reference to those who have noted the striking similarity between his own rhetorical style and that of the late demagogue, Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, and the fascist dictators of World War II, Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

“We want all sides to come together in peace and harmony,” he said in Wisconsin, an echo of his disingenuous response to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that led to the death of a counter-demonstrator last year. There were bad people on both sides, Trump said then, equating racists with those protesting racism.

That false equivalence didn’t wash then. It doesn’t wash now. But now there are pipe bombs in the mailboxes of Donald Trump’s political adversaries. Will voters really believe that the president’s snarling contempt for dissent is in no way complicit in that?

A suspected explosive device mailed to CNN’s New York City headquarters and addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan reportedly contained an image parody of the ISIS flag, along with a popular catchphrase made famous by comedian Larry the Cable Guy.

A senior law enforcement official confirmed to NBC News that the device mailed to Brennan contained a parody image of the ISIS flag, which features Arabic writing with three suggestive silhouettes of women and the “Get ‘Er Done” phrase in the center.

An image of an unidentified person also appears to be on the device next to the flag.

The spoof ISIS flag was created in 2014 by a right-wing parody site called World News Bureau for a satirical article about ISIS, and has since morphed into a meme, NBC News reported.

The FBI did not immediaitely return Fox News' request for comment regarding the ISIS parody image.

The bureau said Wednesday evening that it had identified seven suspicious packages addressed to prominent liberal and Democratic political figures over the previous three days that contained "potentially destructive devices."

The FBI initially said it had recovered five packages that were similar in appearance and bore the return address of an office for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. The packages were addressed to billionaire George Soros, Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, Brennan -- care of CNN -- and former Attorney General Eric Holder. The FBI said it was possible that additional packages were mailed to other locations.

Law enforcement officials involved in the investigation told Fox News that the similarity between the packages has led them to believe that a single individual or group could be responsible.

Late Wednesday, the Los Angeles Central Mail facility was evacuated after employees found a suspicious package, which The Associated Press reported was addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif. The FBI later confirmed that it had recovered two packages addressed to Waters that were similar to the five it referenced in its earlier statement. The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted that its bomb squad had rendered the package at the mail facility safe and the investigation would be turned over to the FBI.

President Trump condemned the threatening mailings Wednesday afternoon, saying that "acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America."

In the last two days, a series of crude pipe bombs have been mailed to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, George Soros, Maxine Waters, and CNN. We are meant to immediately assume that a crazed right-winger was behind this absurdly clumsy plot. Twitter has already dubbed the culprit "the MAGA bomber," despite zero evidence to support the label. Various liberals have, of course, put the blame on President Trump himself.

I think we can pretty well rule out the possibility that Trump sent the bombs. As for the theory — and it is just a theory — that an enraged Republican is responsible, we cannot rule it out. It's certainly possible that some right-wing nut decided to undermine his own cause by staging this failed attack a few weeks before the election. If that turns out to be the case, I won't be terribly shocked. Crazy, stupid, violent people exist in this world, on every side of every issue.

But there is another possibility, of course, and it's a possibility that any rational person can see. It does not take a conspiracy theorist to wonder about the timing and methods in this case. As I said, we are only days from the election. These were rudimentary bombs sent in ludicrously suspicious packaging to high profile Democrats who would obviously have their mail screened. It would take not just an idiot but an idiot of monumental proportions to think that he can literally mail a pipe bomb in an envelope to Obama without the package being intercepted along the way. Not only that, but the bombs were specifically sent to Democrats who, aside from Waters, are no longer in the government. They have no actual political power.

We are left with two possibilities, it seems. Either this was the work of a monumental idiot or it was the work of a more clever sort of person. The clever person would obviously know that these bombs would cause no harm to anyone and certainly wouldn't kill the people whose names were on the envelopes. They'd also know that an attempted attack of this sort, at this point, could only help the Democrats. We could call this a "false flag" but that term is tainted by insane Sandy Hook and 9/11 conspiracy theorists. The "false flag" possibility in this case is neither insane nor implausible. Especially when you consider the liberal propensity for staging fake hate crimes.

But it is just a possibility. We don't know the truth yet. We can only say that there is good reason to doubt the narrative taking shape as we speak. The best course is to hold off on making any determinations either way until the culprit is found and apprehended.

A former top adviser to Hillary Clinton suggested this week that the suspect or suspects linked to a rash of explosive devices addressed to top Democratic figures, including former President Barack Obama and the Clintons, may have been inspired by President Trump's Twitter messages.

Appearing on MSNBC, Philippe Reines said the president's rhetoric can't be ignored in the wake of the attempted bombings, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“If you look at who they’ve targeted so far, it’s almost as if they’re following Donald Trump’s Twitter feed," Reines said Wednesday on "Andrea Mitchell Reports," adding that not everyone in public office has access to Secret Service protection.

"Starting with Debbie Wasserman Schultz, not everyone has that kind of security and you have to be really concerned that while everything so far has not hurt anyone, that might not hold,” Reines added.

Earlier in day, bombs were sent to a number of Democratic figures and critics of Trump, including U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D- Calif., Democratic donor George Soros and former CIA Director John Brennan.

In another Wednesday appearance on MSNBC, Reines doubled down on his claim that Trump’s rhetoric may have been a contributing factor.

“Someone tried to murder Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, two sitting members of Congress, two former Cabinet officials and a news network,” Reines told the network's Chris Hayes. “This is not a coincidence.”

Reines also criticized a White House statement following the evacuation of CNN's offices at the Time Warner Center in New York City, when a suspicious package containing an explosive device was discovered, Mediaite reported.

"Until Donald Trump tweeted a few moments ago, he's been mum and the other part of Sarah Sanders' statement is those who are responsible will be held accountable, and I think you have to ask how much Donald Trump is responsible for the climate that we're in where things like this happen,” he said.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usvQG3ArvVw

On Tuesday during a discussion with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Reines defended people who confront conservatives in public.

“People are seeing public officials and they don’t see any accountability,” he said.

Former Navy explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer Tom Sauer authored a viral Twitter thread concerning the potentially explosive packages addressed to prominent Democrats on Wednesday. According to Sauer, it's extremely likely that the packages were meant to be intercepted and cause political damage, as opposed to actual attempts to harm targets.

Sauer, whose identity has been verified to The Daily Wire, used his expertise to analyze an image of a package addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, which was first obtained by CNN. The former bomb disposal officer, who emphasized that he only spoke on behalf of himself, told The Daily Wire that the makeup of the device appears to indicate that it was intended to be intercepted. "It's highly, highly unlikely that this was a genuine attempt," he explained. "This is like holding up a bank with a toy gun."

In his viral thread, Sauer made note of some of the red flags that support his assessment.

"A few observations from a former bomb disposal officer (i.e. Me)," started the former officer. "Proper pipe bombs don't have wires connected to both ends. That's dumb."
1055145782200987648
Sauer also noted that the size and setup of the device struck him as odd. "You can find timers / remote control receivers WAY smaller than whatever that white box is. A proper timer would best be stored inside the pipe, making it fully encapsulated. That thing is just silly looking," he wrote.
1055145783996137473
"Whoever made that wanted it to be painfully obvious to anyone and everyone that it's a 'bomb,'" he explained. "This is nearly the same as a bundle of road flares wrapped together with an old-timey alarm clock ticking away."
1055145786093244419
When asked by The Daily Wire about the parody ISIS flag sticker reportedly identified on the package, Sauer said this seems to be yet another signal that the package was meant to be intercepted to "scare the hell out of people" and not actually cause damage. "That's going to get flagged right away," he said.

"It reeks of amateur hour," said Sauer, with regard to new reports on "shards of glass" and "Sulphur" being identified within the device. "Glass is fairly light," he explained. Typically you'd find metal or rocks as the device would be heavier and thus more damaging, though glass "is no picnic."

"I would be very surprised — and I could be wrong because I do not have the same information as the feds — that there are any actual explosives in them," added Sauer. Sulphur on its own might "burn a little" but "is not truly an explosive, unless it’s mixed with an oxidizer like potassium nitrate or potassium chlorate."

"Hoax devices," as these appear to be, are far more common than real attempts, he explained in the thread. "In which case, we should ask ourselves what the motives of the 'bomber' are and 'who benefits?' Go ahead. Think deeply and critically."
1055145784994340869
It appears that those who confiscated the device had a similar take on the device as Sauer. The photo suggests that there was no render safe procedure (RSP) done to the device, though, he noted, it could be possible that such a precaution was done after the photo was taken.

Sauer reemphasized that this seems highly likely that this is a hoax device to "scare" people and cause some sort of psychological/political damage, though he ball-parked a slim 1/100 shot that this was the work of a truly incompetent person who did intend harm.

"What makes a bomb a bomb?" he asked. "Bombs actually blow up."

"Look, this person put in some effort and some wherewithal, so you'd think they would be able to make a functioning device if that was their goal," he told The Daily Wire.

Sauer said he could not rule out the idea that this was done by someone on the Right, either. Noting the intended targets, Sauer said they seem to be individuals a "MAGA guy" might hate. "Why wasn't Bernie Sanders targeted?" he asked, noting that Sanders has a populist feel as President Donald Trump does.

A suspect was arrested in Florida on Friday morning in connection with the rash of suspicious packages sent to prominent Democrats nationwide, a law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News.

Federal authorities had been focusing on Florida as the location where the majority of packages originated.

“Some of the packages went through the mail,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told Fox News. “They originated, some of them, from Florida. I am confident that this person or people will be brought to justice.”

Several of the packages went through a U.S. postal facility in Opa-locka, Florida. The Miami-Dade County Police Department confirmed Thursday it was helping federal agents who were at the facility as part of the ongoing investigation.

The USPS operates an innovative imaging system that photographs each piece of mail processed throughout the country. Investigators were likely relying on that system to pinpoint where some of the packages were mailed.

The FBI says the packages each consisted of a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap interior containing potentially destructive devices. The packages were addressed with a computer-printed address label and six stamps.

A government source told Fox News that the stamps are being analyzed by the FBI in Quantico. The source also said the investigation has progressed “significantly” and that the FBI is reaching out to retailers to zero in on where the elements of the bombs were made and where they were sold.

The envelopes and packaging materials will also be closely analyzed and are likely to contain a treasure trove of DNA information that can be used to identify whoever is behind the bombs. Tiny bits of genetic material – traces of sweat, skin cells, saliva, hair or fingerprints – will be a roadmap to the suspect’s door, investigators and bomb experts say.

Currently, the Washington, D.C., field office and the FBI headquarters have 24 teams in place and on the hunt for the culprit.

Forensic investigators at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Va., have been sifting through the packages addressed to former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, liberal billionaire George Soros, former Attorney General Eric Holder, former CIA Director John Brennan and California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.

The devices are thought to have been fashioned from crude, bomb-making designs widely available on the Internet. Authorities haven’t said whether the devices were built to explode and kill or simply sow fear.

Ryan Morris, founder of Tripwire Operation Group, a company that provides explosives training to law enforcement and military officials, called the devices “Mickey Mouse” bombs that were meant to be found. He told Fox News he believes the primary motive is fear. The packages were sent about two weeks ahead of the midterm elections.

Regardless, investigators are treating the devices as “live” explosives New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.

Larry Johnson, a former head of criminal investigations for the U.S. Secret Service who also served as a special agent in charge of the presidential protective detail, agrees that bomb makers usually leave evidence – and their signature- behind.

“If there is a human involved, there is a high probability you’re going to get somewhere investigatively,” he told The Associated Press. “There will be no stone left unturned.”

Johnson believes it’s “highly likely” the person who built the bombs will have been previously flagged by law enforcement. The Secret Service maintains a wide database of groups and individuals who have made threats in the past against presidents or other top political leaders and activists via email, letters or on social media.

James Fitzgerald, a retired FBI profiler and forensic linguist who, in 1996, helped catch "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski -- who killed 3 people and injured 23 in bombings between 1978 and 1995 -- told Fox News on Wednesday that the letter sent to John Brennan, the former director of the CIA and a staunch Trump critic, reminded him of something the Unabomber would send because of the amount of stamps used on the package.

“The linguist in me noticed that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the last name is spelled missing a ‘c’ and John Brennan’s name is spelled missing an ‘n’ and that kind of surprised me and I have a feeling that was done on purpose to make this look like somebody who doesn’t really know who these people are and that it wasn’t an honest mistake. If he had this much anger and vitriol against these people, you would think he would know how to spell their names.

Fitzgerald said that “almost all bombers in the past have been single bombers”, but he added what stood out to past campaigns, including Kaczynski and Mark Conditt, the bomber who terrorized Austin, Texas, earlier this year, for the most part mailed their package bombs separately.

Fitzgerald also said further evidence may present itself.

“There may be some sort of a letter or social media aspect or video tape, or something equivalent to that comes in the mail, a DVD or whatever that claims responsibility for this, but we’re too early, this person had a point they had to make with these devices and quite frankly they’ve made it.”

Fran Townsend, former Homeland Security Advisor in the George W Bush administration, and now CBS News’s security analyst, said the bombs were “not a standard recipe”.

“He didn’t go on the internet and just pull down the standard Al Qaeda recipe which we’ve seen before, so he’s left his own signature, there’s something unique about the way this has been put together which will be very helpful for investigators," she told CBS News.

FLORIDA — The man suspected of sending nearly a dozen explosive devices to top democrats and CNN this week has been captured by federal authorities in Plantation, Florida.

The suspect has been identified as 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc Jr. of Fort Aventura, Florida.

Local news cameras showed law enforcement officials cover what appeared to be Sayoc’s van with a blue tarp. Before the van was covered, images appeared to show the vehicle covered in stickers and photos of President Donald Trump–including markings of the Presidential Seal.

Sayoc is a ‘former New Yorker,’ according to WNBC. Online voting records indicate he has voted Republican. He was arrested in Miami in 2002 for a bomb threat and was sentenced to probation.

Officials say DNA evidence on one of the devices played a role in identifying Sayoc.

In the last week, the devices were sent to many prominent figures including various Democratic politicians (Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Eric Holder, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Maxine Waters, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris), actor Robert De Niro, billionaire investor George Soros, former CIA Director John O. Brennan, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

No one has been injured in the attempted attacks, which prompted an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Officials at the Justice Department are scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 PM ET.

Seems strange that the graphics on the vehicle are custom printed on one sheet. all the colors are crisp and clear, no sun fade (in florida) looks like they were just put on. No old bumper stickers or anything that was put on over time. Plus the guy has a history of threats.
Call me FBD but this whole thing just smells fishy

Four separate officials briefed on, or involved with, the investigation have told NBC this week that some packages were not postmarked because the soft packaging could not go through the postal machines.

"Postmarks are not required for mailings bearing a permit, meter, or precanceled stamp for postage, nor to pieces with an indicia applied by various postage evidencing systems," the USPS says on this page.

But that website explanation wasn't the case for these packages. :dunno:

Anytime I have received packages that could not go through the automated system there was a manually applied barcode code at the bottom for tracking.
