BUCKEYE, AZ (3TV/CBS5) - Buckeye police say a mother was driving drunk when she got behind the wheel of her SUV Halloween night to take half-a-dozen young kids trick-or-treating.

Veronica Lee King faces felony DUI charges.

Police say King drove her SUV off the road into a ditch near Miller and Baseline Roads.

Six children were in the vehicle at the time. Five of them were under ten years old.

Luckily, no one got hurt.

Buckeye police volunteers, who were taking part in the police department's “Operation Safe Halloween,” spotted King's SUV in the ditch around 8:30 p.m.

Officers responded to the scene and identified 41-year-old King as the driver.

Police say King showed a number of signs of impairment including: bloodshot, watery eyes, swaying, slurred speech and having a moderate odor of alcohol.

After King was taken into custody, officers located an open fifth of whiskey in her clutch purse.

Police say preliminary breath tests determined King had a B.A.C. of 0.165%, more than twice the legal limit.

“Last night’s arrest is a great example of the crucial role of BPD’s Citizens on Patrol program,” said Buckeye Police Chief Larry Hall. “Having those volunteers out and about, being extra eyes and ears for our officers, is key in helping keep our city safe.”

King was booked into Maricopa County’s Fourth Avenue Jail on five counts of aggravated DUI, a class 5 felony, and one count of having an open container, a misdemeanor.

Buckeye police notified the Arizona Department of Child Safety about the incident.

King is due back in court Nov.14.
