Bristol University's Philosophy Society was due to hold the talk – chillingly called Your Dog, Just a Friend? – at a pub.

A jokey Facebook post said it was due to be hosted by a "lifelong ally of the bestiality liberation movement and an incest-acceptance activist".

One topic on the table was a 2001 paper called Heavy Petting by academic Peter Singer, which called for the taboo to be lifted.

Several unhappy students slammed the plans.

One said: "This is plain sick. How could anyone think this was an acceptable discussion? What is there even to discuss?"

A post by the society inviting people reads: "We will be asking questions such as, is bestiality morally wrong and is the reason bestiality is taboo because of its moral status or due to other reasons?

"We will also be discussing the arguments by Peter Singer.

"Human and dogs' voices welcome!"

Society president Matthew King said: "I'd like to apologise to anyone who finds the discussion 'sickening'.

"We thought this topic, while controversial, could still be approached sensitively.

”It is highly unlikely anyone at the society would actually agree with such arguments."

If people wont even come to the table for a discussion how can anything get done
