Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who became the youngest woman elected to Congress Tuesday, said she cannot afford to rent an apartment in Washington, D.C., until her congressional salary kicks in.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, made national headlines after she defeated 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's June primary, and will now represent the state’s 14th Congressional District. She told The New York Times that the transition period from now until she starts her job “will be very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary.”

“I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real,” Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times.

She told the paper she saved up before she left her job as a bartender at a New York City restaurant.

“We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January,” she said.

After the story gained traction, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about her apartment situation saying she was “working it out.”

“There are many little ways in which our electoral system isn’t ever designed [nor prepared] for working-class people to lead,” she tweeted. “This is one of them [don’t worry by the way – we’re working it out!]”

She will make $174,000 a year as a member of Congress, according to NBC Washington. A one-room bedroom apartment in Washington, D.C., on average, goes for about $2,170 a month, a report by Zumper stated.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

She graduated from Boston University, a private $70k a year school with a degree in economics and international relations and worked in Ted Kennedy's office.

Huh. Poor little Rican from the Bronx you say?

Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tore into Fox News hosts on Friday for "gleefully" cracking jokes about her finances, saying that the hosts' comments revealed what their thoughts about working-class people.

Ocasio-Cortez revealed on Thursday that she will need to wait for her congressional salary to kick in before she can afford to rent an apartment in D.C.

A Fox News panel laughed on Friday as they discussed the incoming freshman lawmaker's finances.

The panel agreed that the cost of living in the Washington, D.C., metro area is one of the highest in the nation, adding that other lawmakers might face the same issue.

Fox News contributor Judy Miller claimed that Ocasio-Cortez’s admission was a political move her base would love.

“I think what she’s talking about is all of the money in Washington, all of the wealth in Washington, all of the power and a little, simple person like her from New York can’t find a place to live,” Miller said. “It is a brilliant political line."

Anchor Ed Henry claimed that the designer clothes Ocasio-Cortez wore during photoshoots following her primary victory could have been spent on living expenses.

“She had these multithousand-dollar outfits that could pay a month’s rent in Washington D.C.,” he said.

Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter, saying it was “very revealing to see how gleefully Fox News hosts crack jokes about working-class people.”

"It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis," Ocasio-Cortez added in a second tweet.

The future congresswoman said she never purchased the expensive clothes borrowed for her photo shoots and hit at the anchors who mispronounced her name several times throughout the segment.

The Hill has reached out to Fox News for comment.

Ocasio-Cortez, who on Tuesday became the youngest woman in history elected to Congress, worked as a bartender before pulling off a stunning defeat of top incumbent Democrat Rep. Joseph Crowley (N.Y.) in the primary election in June.

There are three months between her general election victory and when she is sworn in as a congressional member, meaning she will not make a salary for that time period.

Ocasio-Cortez said she saved some money before leaving her job at a restaurant and had planned accordingly with her partner.

“We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January," she told The New York Times in an interview.

Genuine with the struggle of not knowing jack shit about the position she was elected to (NY, you're a bunch of fucking idiots), the government of the USA at all, and the economics of the country she's going to be serving for 2 years (maybe less, I'd put money on the possibility that she quits and runs back home with her tail between her legs once she finds out that she can't do jack shit and nobody actually gives a flying shit what she thinks), despite the fact that she has an economics degree from BU.

I'm saying it again: DC is gonna eat her alive.

It gets weirder the more I read. This whole story about how her father died so she had to work odd jobs to help the family... he died while she was a sophomore at BU (2008) and didn't take a break from school as far as I can tell. There was definitely an estate because she stated she was in a long probate battle, which makes little sense also considering his wife was alive. Then she tried to start a publishing company? huh?

That's insane how she scrubbed her background. I read her wiki page a few weeks back and felt like I learned nothing about her.

I just can't get over how much she looks and talks like this chick I went to college with, it makes me feel like I know her  This chick was an outspoken bitch in school, always sat at the front of class, loved to correct the teacher or her peers, asked those questions where it's not really a question - they're just showing you how much they know. Most of you probably know the type.
I swear on my mother she used her barely-native status to get into law school because her grades/LSAT weren't strong enough... when she was in fact raised in a nice suburb and had no ties to the first nations community. The best/worst part is I know all about her law career at a Big 5 firm from friends who work with her: She's apparently a sub-par solicitor, but extremely conniving, a victim when convenience, a bully when necessary, a HUGE kiss-ass, and always gaming the system so that she's actually now a Jr. Partner despite everyone hating her. I ran into her at a wedding recently and got to hear first hand from her how amazingly her career is going

Anyways, feels like that's exactly this type of person. Part of me wonders if this girl I knew was a man, if I'd have more respect for her tenacity... but I don't think so.

Last week, Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, newly elected to Congress, complained that she could not afford an apartment in Washington, D.C. until she began collecting her congressional salary. Ocasio-Cortez had informed The New York Times, “I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.”

Either Ocasio-Cortez spends money like wildfire or her claim isn’t true.

As Fox News reports, “Records show she has more than enough to plunk down on an apartment in the U.S. capital.” Fox News adds that Ocasio-Cortez “reported having between $15,001 and $50,000 in her checking account as of the end of April 2018, according to a Financial Disclosure Report she submitted to the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives. The financial disclosure also reveals that she has an investment account valued between $1,001 and $15,000.”

Real estate website Zillow states that the median rent in Washington, D.C. is $2,700; Ocasio-Cortez will bring home $174,000 a year for serving in Congress.

That minimum of $15,000 that Ocasio-Cortez had in the bank is 15 times the amount 57% of average Americans had in their savings, as USA Today reported in May 2018. USA Today stated, “The average American has less than $4,000 in savings, while 57% of U.S. adults have less than $1,000 to their names.”

Ocasio-Cortez has had some difficulty speaking the complete unvarnished truth or dealing with facts before; last summer she claimed she had a hard life growing up in the Bronx, yet her late father Sergio Cortez-Roman bought a quaint three-bedroom in Yorktown Heights, New York in 1991, when she was about two. In her campaign page bio, she conveniently did not mention that her family moved from Parkchester to Westchester County when she was five years old.

She later changed her bio.

In July, left-leaning Politifact rated her claim “Pants on Fire” that unemployment was low because “everyone has two jobs” and “people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family."

In August, The Washington Post even ran a piece debunking many of Ocasio-Cortez’s claims. Some of those claims included: “Why aren’t we incorporating the cost of all the funeral expenses of those who died because they can’t afford access to health care? That is part of the cost of our system”; “ICE is the only criminal investigative agency, the only enforcement agency in the United States, that has a bed quota. So ICE is required to fill 34,000 beds with detainees every single night and that number has only been increasing since 2009”; “They [national Democrats] were campaigning most when we had more of an American middle class. This upper-middle class is probably more moderate but that upper-middle class does not exist anymore in America”; and “The reason that the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act is because they ruled that each of these monthly payments that everyday Americans make is a tax. And so, while it may not seem like we pay that tax on April 15th, we pay it every single month or we do pay at tax season if we don’t buy, you know, these plans off of the exchange.”
