A transgender prisoner who was sentenced to life for murder has been granted a £20,000 gender reassignment operation on the NHS.
Paris Green will have to be escorted on the 1,000 mile round-trip from HMP Edinburgh, where she is currently being held in the women’s wing, to the hospital in Brighton.
After the surgery, the 27-year-old will spend two weeks in recovery under 24-hour guard.

Prison sources have confirmed that she will be first serving prisoner in Scotland to have the surgery, which will take place sometime in the next few weeks, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.
According to NHS Scotland, male to female genital reassignment surgery is done in Brighton because Scottish hospitals lack the resources to do it.
A prison officer said: ‘You can murder someone brutally but while you are in prison you are entitled to everything you ask for, no matter the burden on a stretched system, because it might breach your human rights to say no.
‘What about the rights of the victim and his family?’
Another said: ‘Has anyone asked the nursing staff who will look after her if they are happy to care for a murderer? This is not a life-saving operation, it is not vital to keep Green healthy.’
Green, who was born Peter Laing, has identified as a woman since 2011.
In 2013 she was sentenced to a minimum if 18 years behind bars for the murder of Robert Shankland, 45, who was sexually assaulted before being battered to death in Green’s flat.
Kevin McDonagh and Dean Smith were also convicted as her accomplices.
Shortly after being imprisoned, she was moved from Cornton Vale women’s prison in Stirling after she was found having sex with the other inmates.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: ‘If a request is made by the NHS for surgery for one of the prisoners it is treating, we would not and could not stand in the way.’
