LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Renee Abeyta was at her Lakewood home doing chores Wednesday afternoon when she got a notification on her phone saying there was someone at her front door.

Initially thinking it was a delivery person, she checked outside, but didn’t find anyone or any packages. Thinking it was odd, she says she checked the Ring app on her phone. Ring uses a device with a camera to monitor and record events outside someone's home.

The Ring video showed a woman walking up to Abeyta's porch and stealing a package. Abeyta ran outside and saw her crossing the street to get away.

“I thought, 'No way this is happening to me,'” Abeyta said.

Abeyta got in her car, parked and confronted the woman. She recorded the whole confrontation on her phone, asking for the woman’s name and threatening to call the police. As the woman took off running, Abeyta chased her down for about a minute.

“I don’t even know what came out of my mouth or even why I said what I did. It just happened,” Abeyta said. “I was mad as hell. There was no way I was going to let her go. I would have ran for as many miles as I had to to get my package.”

Finally, she got the woman to stop and hand over Abeyta’s package, which contained a Crock Pot cover.

Abeyta says it didn’t matter what the gift was, it’s the principle: no one should steal from strangers, especially this close to Christmas.

No one should steal from anybody, strangers or not, at any time of the year.

That fucking thief got off easy. I would have tackled her to the ground, called the cops, and held her until they got there and then I would have pressed charges. Granted, it would probably only been a misdemeanor because of the value of the object stolen, but it's the principle of the thing.

It's also dangerous to be chasing down someone like that. Follow her while on the phone with the police is a better call if you are going that far for a crock pot cover.

Or you could just shoot her. Just sayin'.

Agreed. Even saying - I've got you on my phone! could inspire the criminal to fkk you up and take your phone.

I haven't seen it, but the wife did and said it was hilarious. I guess he's some engineer that works at NASA or something.

Yeah he's an engineer and somehow installs a camera in the packages. There's one where the person opens it in a car and starts yelling - Omg, it smells sooo bad!!!

Incidentally, years ago before driving I used to ride a 10-speed bike everywhere.

I kept it on our deck right beside the back door.

Some a-hole stole it one night. I was home, awake and lights were on in the house.

It upset me quite a bit that someone would be that brave to steal something near the door of a house.

Thinking of the law and stereotypes in America. Don't you guys have the right to tune someone up who's on your property?

Unfortunately it turned out all but one of those was staged... but still awesome.

I'm just so flabbergasted how common package theft seems to be... these people mostly don't look like they'd burgle homes or mug people (just a generalization obviously). How the fuck do they become so brazen and sick. Motherfuckers need Jesus.

When you have nothing, nothing to lose. It's low impact so they don't receive much punishment if caught

I would love to see someone set dogs on them, but in this day and age the owner would be in more trouble

That guy should have called the cops instead of just scaring them off. They obviously have made a career out of it.
