Forget jail, curfews and community service, the leaders of the people of Bristol believe they have the solution for tackling crime: Ban cheese toasties.

They have been deemed a magnet for antisocial behaviour and the gateway to truancy as councils try to stop locals being ‘terrorised’ by the young.

The problem of the cheese toasty crooks came to light when a food van owner applied for a licence to operate in the city’s Monks Park.

They’ve previously been allowed to sell cold food and drinks, but have now been told they won’t be allowed to sell cheese toasties over fears of the food’s links to bad behaviour.

Councillor Claire Hiscott also believes it will ‘lure’ children into skiving off school.

She said: ‘It’s right next to Orchard School, which is a challenging school that sometimes has a problem with keeping kids in school.

‘They have to have patrols of staff to make sure kids don’t walk off site. The lure of a food concession may encourage kids to take a little walk.

‘The school has made a lot of effort to encourage healthy eating. We have problems with childhood obesity.

‘Historically we had antisocial behaviour, not just motorbikes, from young adults gathering with alcohol and causing a disturbance.

Anything that’s going to be a gathering place is likely to bring that back.. We’ve managed to eradicate that. It’s a nice quiet park.’

Planning and development officer Sue Long told the meeting: ‘We’re very mindful of what will work within a park.

‘We’re looking to replicate coffee and ice cream rather than a burger or chips van. That’s not something we would consider.’

I went to two high schools, one normal and the other was Rock n Roll high school.

At Rock n Roll, we had a lunchroom that served food all day and it had a jukebox. Lots of us skipped first class and got a plate of fries and gravy in the morning.

Fries and gravy was a big deal because you could get them all day, even on a plate to go.

If they would have closed that lunchroom outside of noon - 1pm, lots more students would have attended classes
