Days after the American Psychological Association (APA) announced that “traditional masculinity” is “harmful” to society and can lead to homophobia and sexual harassment, razor brand Gillette released a new ad campaign touching on the same topic.

The Procter & Gamble-owned company is using the new ad to tackle its own slogan, “The Best a Man Can Get,” addressing issues of harassment, bullying and men’s mental health. It also promotes the idea that men can and need to do better when it comes to holding each other accountable and treating women with respect so as to set a better example for boys watching them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPPf3sZIo-Q

The ad, "entitled We Believe, begins with a compilation of actions commonly associated with 'toxic masculinity,'" a press release stated.

“We believe in the best in men. To say the right thing, to act the right way. Some already are. But some is not enough. Because the boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow,” a narrator says over clips of men defending others from bullying or stopping friends from harassing women.

The video is more than just an advertisement for the company’s products. Gillette is using it as a way to promote change in society and has dedicated a page on its website to the cause.

“It’s time we acknowledge that brands, like ours, play a role in influencing culture. And as a company that encourages men to be their best, we have a responsibility to make sure we are promoting positive, attainable, inclusive and healthy versions of what it means to be a man,” the page reads.

Along with the message, Gillette also announced it will be donating $1 million a year for the next three years to various non-profit organizations designed to help men of all ages achieve their personal best.

“Traditional masculinity ideology has been shown to limit males’ psychological development, constrain their behavior, result in gender role strain and gender role conflict and negatively influence mental health and physical health,” the APA report warns.

However, Gillette’s message doesn’t seem to be sitting well with customers. Many commenters on YouTube wrote that they won’t be buying the brand’s products anymore.

Yup. More fodder to be used for political gain and the corporations are betting on the SJWs.

Edit: Watched it again. That's really disturbing.

And it makes this ad complete hypocrisy.

FFS.

They were originally talking about a clean shaven man vs a scruffy looking unshaven man. It was a LOOKS thing that dipped over into a FEELING GOOD thing.

Sexual assaults, boys fighting, men barbecuing....NOTHING to do with daily hygiene.

I've got capslockitus, apologies....

These days there's dudes getting facials
Manicured, waxed and botoxed
With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands
You can't grip a tackle-box
With all of these men lining up to get neutered
It's hip now to be feminized
I don't highlight my hair
I've still got a pair
Yeah honey, I'm still a guy
All my eyebrows ain't plucked
There's a gun in my truck
Oh thank God, I'm still a guy

I always take my moral advice from multi-national corporations, so I for one welcome this message and will be entering a twelve week reprogramming camp to learn to shave like a feminist. All I'm allowed to pack is myself, and my Gillette™ Fusion 5™ Special Edition so I won't be online for a bit.

Female DJ on a radio station here mentions this commercial on her show. Starts by saying 'either you like it or you don't', then goes on to say how correct it is and that males everywhere should take note and follow Gillette's advice.

For the first time in years I got the urge to call a radio station and really challenge her opinion. She's a little gay though (confirmed and admitted lesbian) so I could see where my name would end up.

Yeah, I think unfortunately things have tilted far enough in the favor of the SJW's that this is a losing battle for people that think 'normally'

Hal-9000

Yep, that's why I stopped my ongoing argument about perceived sexism online. Said it before, but I will not die on that particular hill...as I'm arguing with a black woman from South Africa who works with marginalized victims  I lose automatically no matter what due to the current environment.

That's okay, I'm patient. Things will level and the very people who are complaining the loudest right now will realize they are doing exactly what they're fighting against.

Even in quotes and understanding the intent, I could see Lance getting crucified for using that word.

We have to adjust so much and be careful to such a degree when discussing the problem, that it dilutes the conversation to the point... where no points can be made

There is some market analysis saying that the real goal was to ingratiate the brand to female customers because they are losing male market share to lower cost options. They sell female products at a higher margin.

If true, they are actually mocking women, which makes me laugh.

I use an old Gillette Trac 2 razor and can confirm this. Years ago I started buying a knockoff brand where I get 15 blades for about 8 bucks. Something like a 300% savings.

I'd lean heavily towards a theory like that. These companies have no soul, especially the marketing & distribution department. I think they studied this from a dollars and cents perspective and this is how it played out.

It's called the "pink tax" - the exact same items labeled for females sold at higher prices than the "male" product.

Perhaps our scale is wrong. Perhaps the way to righteous enlightenment is not through higher intelligence but through lower. Perhaps the pursuit of higher forms of brain function has actually pushed the currently evolved human beyond it's optimal point. Perhaps we aren't ready. Perhaps the mathematical use of lowest common denominator, to make the complicated simplified and understandable, is a better definition that the social definition, which is a pejorative for lowest form of being.
