Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., made C-SPAN history on Wednesday during her first speech on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, addressed her colleagues on Capitol Hill for nearly four minutes, talking about one of her constituents in the Bronx — an air traffic controller who recently missed his first paycheck due to the partial government shutdown.

Her speech was posted to C-SPAN's Twitter account, and, according to Howard Mortman, communication director for the public cable network, it became the "most-viewed" video of a House member's remarks ever tweeted by the channel.

As of Thursday night, the video of Ocasio-Cortez's speech had around 12,000 retweets and more than 40,000 likes. Mortman said it received 1.16 million views in just over 12 hours.

The record for most views for the Senate involved Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., questioning then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in October, Mortman added. That video received 7.14 million views.

Ocasio-Cortez, who was sworn into Congress on Jan. 3, said on Thursday that the current shutdown "is actually not about a wall, it is not about the border, and it is certainly not about the well-being of everyday Americans."

"The truth is, this shutdown is about the erosion of American democracy, and the subversion of our most basic governmental norms," she said.

Following her first House address, the youngest member of Congress — who's been active on social media in her search of Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. — co-taught a social media class to fellow representatives on "the “most effective ways to engage constituents on Twitter and the importance of digital storytelling."

I laughed and said without even looking, "I assure you that's fear mongering". What the fuck? So I looked it up.

Yes, the FDA did have a 2 week lull in the 2 and 3 year cycled routine inspection of high risk food facilities. ROUTINE. I partially blame the FDA itself for completely misleading tweets - not sure who that Scott Gottlieb hack is, but he needs to be fired immediately.

In reality, this impacted nothing.

The FDA oversees packaged foods and produce. Meat, poultry and processed eggs are checked by the Department of Agriculture and have continued. States handle about half of the FDA's inspections and those haven't stopped. FDA inspections of imported foods and other core functions such as monitoring for food poisoning outbreaks have continued as well, the agency said.

Keep in mind that for the most part those not getting paid are pretty well taken care of by their Govt check and benefits. We're not exactly talking about minimum wage workers here living paycheck to paycheck with no credit. There are programs in place to help them, Businesses are going out of their way to help them, A majority probably have enough in savings to get through this temporary situation easily and the rest can carry their debt on a credit card for a couple months if need be.

No one is starving, and generally that are way better off right now than many, many others in this country. But that doesn't make for good news, so lets talk about a few individuals who are living beyond their means.
