Sharpen those pencils.

A woman in Alberta, Canada, announced a contest earlier this month that calls on potential homeowners to pen an essay and pay $25 to get a chance to win her home that’s valued at $1.7 million.

One caveat: If she gets a matching offer, the contest will be canceled and the entry money will be returned, according to CTV News.

Alla Wagner has lived in the rural Millarville home since 2011. She loves it there. There are sweeping views of a nearby pond and mountain range. But Wagner has had some health issues that would require her to modify the house, and she does not want to compromise the 5,000-square-foot Georgian’s aesthetic.

“I view this home as a work of art,” she told The Star.

She’s been trying to sell the home for a few months but said that she has not received a serious offer. If the home is sold, she said, she will donate 5 percent of the net profit to a women’s shelter.

She hopes to receive about 68,000 entries and will stick to a 350-word maximum (https://www.facebook.com/WriteALetterWinAHouse/).

“It would be a beautiful way for someone not giving up hope. I’m not going to give up hope. I believe that when this contest works, I know it’s going to be well worthwhile,” she said.

The home I'm in (single level bungalow built in the late 50's) was assessed at 570k last year. We might be able to get 350-400k for it in the current (horrible) market.

If that home was in our city, it would go for 2 million easy not even looking at the lot it's on.

And her offer is worded a little wonky. It reads like she's giving it away for the 25 dollars and essay, when really this will happen:

"One caveat: If she gets a matching offer the contest will be canceled..."

She's relying on 60000 people submitting 25 dollars = 1.5 million and then she will 'give it away'. If those numbers don't materialize she'll take whatever offer is next highest.

She's just doing this to get more eyes on her property and I bet will never give it away. And Millarville is a hamlet in the ass end of nowhere

Well, she admits that she hasn't received any 'serious' offers, so it's an interesting way to try and sell it. :-k I doubt she will get 60,000 entries though

Hey, when I first heard about it I looked for the loophole/catch and she blatantly says she will award the home after getting 60000 submissions. I had my 25 dollars ready and then thought - She's going to read 60000 entries all of them saying what amounts to - I'm poor, I need a home, I've lost my job (our province is still in a huge oil based job recession) and my entry would just be another sob story in the bucket. If she actually gets that many  and decides to transfer ownership, you wanna bet she'll pick the most heartbreaking story.

Here's the caveat. Millarville is a small hamlet southwest of my city and to live on an acreage out there the utilities and property tax/fuel to commute to wherever would demand the owner has a job making at least 50-80k per year. Better said, if I were to win that thing tomorrow the first thing I'd do is re-list it on the market. I couldn't afford the monthly expenses and I would assume people writing about hardships couldn't either.

Exactly. She's listed it for 1.7 million, can't get that price and has arranged through her sad-essay contest, for an assured 1.5 mil.

Her logistics are bad though. If she doesn't reach the magical 60000 number, she stated she will refund all of the money. Refunding 55000 donations of 25 dollars in various forms? Good luck sweetie

Or....what's to keep her from just disappearing with all the money? :-k

I thought of the same thing. A Go fund me project in disguise.

She's been pretty forthright with personal info and the authorities would have her house..

I almost wonder if she doesn't need some sort of approval as it's a contest, I bet the Lotto board wants their cut.
