MOUNT HOLLY - A special education teacher is accused of having sex with a student at Rancocas Valley Regional High School.
Alexandra Reiner, 30, allegedly engaged in sexual activity last month with a male student in Mount Holly and Lumberton, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.
An investigation began last week after district officials reported "a possible inappropriate relationship" between Reiner and the student, the statement said.
Reiner was arrested Tuesday night on charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
She was being held in Atlantic County Jail, which houses female inmates for Burlington County.
Additional details about the victim, including his age, were withheld to protect the student's identity, the prosecutor's office said Tuesday.
Chris Heilig, superintendent of the regional district, addressed the arrest in a letter to the school community.
"As soon as RV administrators were made aware of this matter, the teacher was not permitted on our campus or at any RVRHS events," said Heilig, who noted officials contacted the prosecuto's office "immediately."
"We will will continue to cooperate with the authorities throughout their investigation," Heilig said.
"The well-being of our students, staff and the entire Rancocas Valley community is always our highest priority," he said.
According to the school's website, Reiner is a 2006 graduate of Rancocas Valley.
She holds a bacher's degree in English and a master's degree in education, both from Rutgers University.
Reiner is to make a first appearance Wednesday in Superior Court, Mount Holly.
