WAREHAM – An East Wareham man arrested twice in two days for shoplifting and disorderly conduct, respectively, complained that officers should be more concerned with serious crimes in town.

On Thursday, Feb. 14, at about 10:30 p.m. Wareham Police received a call from Stop and Shop about a shoplifter who fled the store and was headed toward the area of the Liquor Locker, police said. Officer Michael Phinney located the suspect in the liquor store and found the stolen groceries next to the building, police said. It contained more than $75 in items, and Officer Phinney placed the man in custody. After being placed under arrest, the suspect attempted to escape from the cruiser by kicking at the rear door and protective bars, police said. His escape attempt was thwarted when Officer Blaise Lalli ordered him to stop, or he would face additional charges. The suspect now began to berate the officers for not dealing with more serious crimes in town, police said. Eric Bedard, 40, of East Wareham was arrested and charged with shoplifting and it appears there was no damage to the cruiser’s interior, police said.

On Friday, Feb. 15, at midnight, officers responded to the Water’s Edge Trailer Park for a reported disturbance, police said. This was the second time in less than an hour that officers had responded to the area for a disturbance, police said. Upon arrival officers attempted to speak to the same man who had earlier been given a verbal warning. However, this time he was immediately confrontational and uncooperative, police said. The man accused officers of harassing him and when he was told he was being placed in custody flailed his arms in a violent manner, resisting officers, police said. Eric Bedard, 40, of East Wareham was arrested for disorderly conduct by Officers Nate Aronson and Ryan Turner. Police noted this was the same man who had been arrested for shoplifting the day before.
