On Monday, leftists in the University of Michigan’s history department announced they have created an event called “When Provocateurs Dabble in History: Ben Shapiro and the Enwhitenment” that will run simultaneously with Daily Wire Editor-In-Chief Ben Shapiro’s Tuesday night speech. The email sent to all of the university’s history majors stated:
Hi historians!
Join the History Club and the History Department tomorrow for an important and exciting event in response to Ben Shapiro’s visit to campus. When Provocateurs Dabble in History: Ben Shapiro and the Enwhitenment will feature speakers and panelists responding to Shapiro’s attacks on campuses and academia along with his new history book, The Right Side of History: How Reason and Purpose Made the West Great.
Shapiro’s new book, his eighth, is not due to be released until next week.
The email continued: "We are honored to be joined by Dean Angela Dillard, Professor Anne Berg, Professor John Carson, and Professor Hussein Fancy!"
At the time of the writing of this article, at 5 p.m. PST on Monday, the panel had a grand total of 51 people who were interested, according to the event’s Facebook page.
Spencer Brown, spokesman for Young America’s Foundation, which is sponsoring Shapiro’s event as part of their spring 2019 lecture tour featuring Shapiro, stated:
Unfortunately this practice of campus leftists hiding from ideas rather than engaging with them continues to be the modus operandi for administrators and professors alike. It is truly a shame that universities have been turned from sites of higher learning to indoctrination camps by the exceedingly intolerant Left.
Counter-events to Shapiro’s speech have been scheduled before, drawing small crowds while Shapiro’s lectures sell out. In January 2018, at the University of Connecticut, where an email from the university’s associate vice president and chief diversity officer suggested that students whose feelings were threatened by Shapiro’s upcoming speech should consult her office, the Cultural Centers, the Dean of Students Office, or the university’s office of Counseling & Mental Health Services, an event titled, “Ben Shapiro Is Not As Insightful As he Thinks He Is,” was scheduled for January 24, the same time as Shapiro’s speech on campus.
The email to the students threatened by Shapiro’s speech read, “We understand that even the thought of an individual coming to campus with the views that Mr. Shapiro expresses can be concerning and even hurtful and that’s why we wanted to make you aware as soon as we were informed.”
In February 2018, at the University of Minnesota, a counter-event was scheduled at the same time as Shapiro’s February 26 lecture. That event, titled, “White Supremacy in the Age of Trump: An Anti-Racist Teach-In” and approved by the university, attacked Shapiro as a “#FakeNews” conservative with “divisive” views.
The Facebook event description read, “A conservative political commentator whose racist indifference toward the pain and suffering of Black and Brown people is well-documented, Mr. Shapiro has been invited by the Young America’s Foundation to spread his divisive views in a campus-wide lecture on February 26th. Join a multi-racial coalition of UMN students, faculty, and staff as we reaffirm the importance of racial justice to American democracy.”
