New disturbing allegations of sex with teacher and student

RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — New court documents have been released that describe how intimate the alleged relationship was between a Washoe County School District substitute teacher and a student.

40-year-old Darrell Baldwin, who the district says worked at Wooster High School, had been teaching there since 2016 in a variety of classrooms.

Baldwin was arrested May 9 on charges that he had sex with a 17-year-old student. The Washoe County School District first found out about the allegations after another female student told a school guidance counselor. Reno Police say many students, friends and co-workers of the girl noticed the "closeness" of the two.

Court paperwork says the 17-year old girl told Reno Police that she met Baldwin when she was a freshman. During her senior year, she was his teacher's aide and helped out with a boys' gym class. According to court documents, the girl said they developed a close friendship and it turned sexual on September 28, 2018 after a Wooster High School Homecoming game. Police said she told them that -- on that September night -- she got into Baldwin's Jeep and drove to the Days Inn on S. Virginia Street in Reno where he rented a room.

Since September, she told police they had sex at many motels, family residences, and outdoor locations. Court documents said they would spend time together "as much as possible."

The teen told police that Baldwin bought her multiple sex toys, lingerie, flowers, and even a diamond ring from Helzburg Jewelers, court documents said. A subpoena to the jewelry shop in the Meadowood Mall confirms the purchase.

Phone records belonging to the girl document about 6,000 phone calls and text messages between the teen and Baldwin, police say. The girl also said she took many pictures of the two in intimate and couple-posed photos, which a Reno detective said she shared.

Reno Police got a Search and Seizure order for DNA on May 8 for Baldwin and his Jeep. On May 9, a detective met with Baldwin and his attorney to arrange for him to surrender at the jail. A day later, court records show Judge Peter Sferrazza let Baldwin out on 'his own recognizance' with conditions. Baldwin can't have contact with the victim. He'll also be on house arrest with a GPS monitor unless he goes to work, a medical appointment, or legal meeting.

Baldwin has been charged with one count of "school employee, age 21 or older, engaging in sexual conduct with pupil, age 16 or 17."

The Washoe County School District spokeswoman said they took immediate action to prevent Baldwin from working at any school in the district.
