Giants 24
Vikings 27
Giants won the bet
Look at the poll. It has a betting line spread. The Vikings are listed with a (-3.5) next to their name. That -3.5 is the spread. That means whatever the final score is, you subtract 3.5 from the Vikings' final score to get the final betting line score. The Vikings would have to beat the Giants by a margin greater than 3.5 points to win the bet.
The actual final score was Giants 24 Vikings 27, but the final betting line score was Giants 24 Vikings 27 -3.5 = 23.5, so while the Vikings won the game, they lost the bet since they didn't cover the spread.
Ok. That's all very new to me
See, in NFL games, the most popular way to bet is with the spread as these games are set. The sports books set these spread lines based on the team, the game location, injuries, etc. So as DGX pointed out, the favorite to win is the team with the negative points showing and they need to win by at least that many points to win the bet.
Now you can also bet the money line, which is just picking a team to win, and when you do that, you will see odds like you would for soccer matches like you are more used to seeing.
