They were real. They existed at a time in Earth's geological history where predators existed only in water. 345 to 290 million years ago. Earth's atmospheric pressure at the time allowed them to grow so big. We (humans) wouldn't have been able to survive under the atmospheric conditions during that time period.
Berkeley UCLA (I think) used to have an online exhibit about Earth's formation and it's geological history, what it's atmosphere was like in different periods, and all the animals and plants that existed in different time periods. It was really cool. I'm having a hard time locating it right now, but when I find it, I'll post it for you. It's one of those super cool time wasters where you actually learn some really cool shit about our planet.
