NBC star Debra Messing praises 13-year-old son's national anthem protest

Debra Messing is proud of her son for not being proud of his country.

The “Will & Grace” star prompted online outraged after posting a photo of her son protesting the national anthem at a hockey game.

Messing took to Instagram last Wednesday to show emotional support for her son after he asked for permission to protest the national anthem for the New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden.

In the since-deleted post, the "Will & Grace" star wrote:

“’Please stand for the Star Spangled Banner.’

Son: ‘Mom, I want to sit down in protest. Can we do that?’

Me: ‘Yes, honey. We can do that.’

“Who’s crying?” she wrote. “I’m not crying. #BLM (Black Lives Matter)”

This is not the first time Messing has shown support the anthem protests or Black Lives Matter.

The actress recently tweeted out a link of Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee kneeling in solidary with NFL players, writing that it made her “teary.”

Messing has been an outspoken critic of President Trump, participating in the Women's March in Jan. 2017 and a Tax Day protest last April.

I am not proud that people like this live in our great country.

So to save me some googling, can someone explain what the sitting during anthems supposedly protests?

Is it Trump...or the idea that black people are being treated badly...or some pension thing with the NFL?

Hal, you're not getting a definitive answer because there isn't one. And for those of us that attempted to understand, we've gotten 2 minutes in and wanted to puke over the stupidity.

Now couple that with the underlying issue. We just want to watch a game. Sport exists because we need a diversion. Bleed over the day to day bullshit into sport, and it's ruined. So, almost all the time, the answer is "I don't give a fuck about your bullshit, I just want to watch the fucking game".

Is part of it a dig at Trump and how he's running the country?

Only in that Trump stirred the pot by saying the league should not allow it and the players should be suspended or fired.

So the players are sitting in protest of how they're being treated as professionals or as black men....or

Other than it makes me remember our province of Quebec, which has tried to separate multiple times. And during one of their 'protests', I saw a native Quebecer drive a car while dragging a Canadian flag under the back wheels. From that moment on one thought was cemented into my mind - Leave now. Canada is not for you.

The guys kneeling think that they are being disproportionately targeted by the police and suffer unfair brutality from it. They are saying because of that (disproportion) they refuse to stand for the anthem of a country that does not treat them fairly.
