Self Defense Training

Has anyone completed a self-defense course? I am looking for one.

One of my best friends has a self defense business and teaches this stuff. He is a level 4 Krav Maga instructor. My wife took one of the ladies courses he offers. I feel much better when she's out alone now.

Single class or series? Is a workout routine included?

I'm always skeptical of the 'McDojo,' traditional martial arts that seem to be largely bullshit, but it sounds like krav maga is one that's actually legitimate, that or some form of mixed martial arts or BJJ (which is also an incredibly good workout!). If I was to take anything it'd probably be brazilian jiu jitsu, half for the self-defense aspect, and half for the great exercise. My colleague who does BJJ a few times a week raves about it, and he's gotten extremely fit.

I'm not entirely convinced that you can learn self defense online. I think that's something you have to take a physical class in. If it was just as simple as learning to play Good block/Bad block, that would be one thing, but when I think of self defense, I'm thinking of a multi-faceted set of physical skills, close quarter fighting, things that need to be practiced over and over again under the watchful eye of an experienced teacher/sensei.

I agree. Maybe to learn basics, but practice and muscle memory seem vital.

I have a few years of BJJ and about a year of Muay-Thai..

You need train/ground time to learn what works and what doesnt.. Once you grapple a few times you get a lot more comfotable when people get physical.
