    Technical E-Reader (Kindle) Question

I asked this back at AS and "Somewhere else" too... Never did get a definitive answer so I'll post it up here again.

Mrs. Tool got a Kindle for Christmas. Thank God, something else to keep her busy instead of nagging me!

Except, she's nagging me to find her a free program that will remove DRMs from Epub books. Don't even ask me what that means.

Books that she buys and downloads work fine but free books from the Public Library download with these pesky DRMs attached to them so they can't be displayed in Kindle.

I found a trial program on the web called epubdrmsetup.exe that worked like a charm, she says, but the free trial purposely removes a bunch of pages from the book to force you to buy the $30 program.

Does anybody know of anything that works for free?

We need to remove the DRMs before Kindle can display the book and even http://www.calibre-ebook.com/ doesn't work unless the DRMs are removed first.

    Thanks in advance.

I had poked around about this when you posted it on AS MT. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any free software to remove DRMs from reader files. I found a bunch on instructions on how to do it manually, but after reading them, they are not for novice types. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, if you found something you like in epubdrmsetup, go ahead and purchase it.
    Other than that, try this:

Cnet is a safe place. Dunno if this software will do what you need, but it looks like it. G/L

Thanks, guys. I think Mrs. T knows about most of those sites but I'll definitely pass them along to her. She's been interested in removing DRMs because that's the way the New York Public Library delivers them.

There are some ways you can strip DRM if you do have a legit permission to read them-- that is, if you've got the token on your machine that lets you read, there are some hacks that will jailbreak the content.

Wired Magazine actually just ran a piece on how to jailbreak your Kindle files
