The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), having arrested more than 100 people over last week's violent siege of the US Capitol, was now looking into individuals who could possibly threaten the safety of the January 20 inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden, its director said.

Key points:
FBI Director Christopher Wray said the agency had identified over 200 suspects after the Capitol violence
Cities across the country have ramped up security amid warnings of protests in all states
Officials are warning the threat could remain well beyond the inauguration
Director Chris Wray said the FBI was tracking an "extensive amount of concerning online chatter", including calls for armed protests leading up to the inauguration.

Mr Wray, in his first public appearance since the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, said in a security briefing for Vice-President Mike Pence that the FBI remained concerned about the potential for violence at protests and rallies in Washington and in state capitols around the country.

Those events could bring armed individuals near government buildings and elected officials, Mr Wray warned, while also noting: "One of the real challenges in this space is trying to distinguish what's aspirational versus what's intentional."

"We're looking at individuals who may have an eye towards repeating that same kind of violence that we saw last week," he said.

"From January 6th alone, we've already identified over 200 suspects. So we know who you are, if you're out there, and FBI agents are coming to find you."

Meanwhile, the nation's capital and cities across the country ramped up security ahead of the inauguration amid warnings of possible political violence even after the swearing-in.

Delta, Alaska, American, and United Airlines announced on Thursday they would not allow travellers flying to Washington area airports to check firearms on its flights before the inauguration.

Delta chief executive Ed Bastian told CNBC his airline had placed passengers on a no-fly list for their involvement in disruptive incidents that, for example, targeted Republican US Senator Mitt Romney.
