Ted Cruz mocks CBS News' Gayle King for telling Stacey Abrams she's 'extremely qualified' to be Biden's VP pick

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Fox News

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, had some fun at the expense of "CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King for telling onetime gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams that she is "extremely qualified" to be vice president.

Abrams, who became a progressive starlet following her narrow 2018 defeat against Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R), has been promoting her qualifications to be former Vice President Joe Biden's running mate as she has been on the shortlist of several female politicians who are being considered to share a ticket with the presumptive Democratic nominee.

During an interview on Tuesday, King asked Abrams why she believes she is a "good choice" for Biden.

"Part of my response not becoming governor in 2018 was not to hide my head but to really address the core issues facing our country," Abrams responded, pointing to initiatives on the census, financial relief for low-income Americans, and building state-level voting infrastructure.

"I believe I have the capacity, the competence, the skills, and the willingness to serve," she added.

"I just want to say that's a great nuts-and-bolts answer because everybody knows you're extremely qualified," King later complimented the Democrat.

Cruz mocked the CBS News anchor for showering Abrams with praise.

"Hard-hitting journalism: 'Why are you so am-aaaaay-zing?'" the GOP senator reacted.

Along with Abrams on Biden's shortlist of potential VP candidates include his former 2020 rivals Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as well as Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has been in the public eye in recent weeks for her response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Hype Stacey Abrams Now Actively Campaigning For VP Slot As Her Own ‘Hype-Man’

By Eric Quintanar - The Daily Wire

With the results of the Democratic presidential primary now all but certain, failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams of Georgia has begun actively campaigning to become former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 running mate.

“I try to be straightforward because, while we hope the work speaks for itself, sometimes the work needs a hype-man,” Abrams, who was the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representative before she campaigned for governor and lost, said during an episode of “The View,” reports Mediaite.

“I think Vice President Biden is going to make a smart choice,” Abrams told “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin, who asked Abrams if it would be a “slap in the face” if Biden didn’t select a woman of color as his running mate.

“I would share your concern about not picking a woman of color, because women of color, particularly black women, are the strongest part of the Democratic party — the most loyal,” she said.

“Now, that loyalty isn’t just how we vote, it’s how we work,” said Abrams. “And if we want to signal that that work would continue,” she said, “then we need a ticket that reflects the diversity of America.”

During an interview with Elle Magazine published last Wednesday, Abrams surprised the magazine by bucking established political convention and openly proclaiming that she should be Biden’s running mate.

“I would be an excellent running mate,” said Abrams. “I have the capacity to attract voters by motivating typically ignored communities. I have a strong history of executive and management experience in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.”

“I’ve spent 25 years in independent study of foreign policy. I am ready to help advance an agenda of restoring America’s place in the world. If I am selected, I am prepared and excited to serve,” she said.

According to Politico, the Biden campaign plans to start a committee next month to begin vetting candidates, and the former vice president anticipates that he could have a formal shortlist of three people by July.

With that said, Democratic sources told The New York Post earlier this month that Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)is leading the pack among potential candidates. Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) occupy the mid-tier of likely picks, alongside Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI). The Michigan governor’s recent habit of blasting the Trump administration has earned her criticism from the Detroit News editorial board, which has accused her of “sending conflicting signals about her priorities and motivations.”

Abrams reportedly occupies the bottom tier, along with several other long-shots, including the governor of New Mexico and a senator from Nevada. A campaign insider told the news agency that Abrams’ lack of experience is a political liability, and that the former vice president wants a candidate who could theoretically serve as president from day one.

Juan Williams: Four black leaders who can defeat Trump

BY JUAN WILLIAMS, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - The Hill

Keeping track of the 2020 race for president by watching Joe Biden versus Donald Trump is now old school and outdated.

These days, you also have to keep an eye on social media where Trump gets far more attention with the help of looney websites and the Russians.

And eyes wide open at the work being done for Biden by four black Democrats — let’s call them the “Fantastic Four.”

Here they are – President Obama; former first lady Michelle Obama; former Attorney General Eric Holder and former Georgia state House minority leader, Stacey Abrams.

Let’s begin with the former president, the most powerful political player not currently in office.

When Obama endorsed Biden earlier this month, The New York Times ran a quote describing Obama as having unique superpowers. He is “a surrogate unlike anyone else anyone can bring to bear — I mean, who has Trump got?” said Democratic pollster Joel Benenson.

    Good question.

Even if the previous Republican in the White House, President George W. Bush, agreed to campaign for Trump, he does not excite Trump’s anti-Republican establishment base of voters.

How about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)? I’ll let you answer that.

By contrast, Obama is revered among Democratic voters. He even has pull among swing state independent voters, some of whom backed Obama before voting for Trump.

Obama also has the power to stir up the maximum turnout from black voters, the most reliable voting bloc among Democrats and a group that overwhelmingly disapproves of Trump, as shown in poll after poll.

Getting the full black vote to the polls could be fatal to Trump’s reelection. In 2016, the black voter turnout declined 7 percentage points from 2012. Almost 67 percent of black voters turned out to reelect Obama whereas that figure fell to 60 percent four years later.

The absence of those black voters in swing states was bad news for Hillary Clinton. She lost Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin by a narrow margin, a combined total of about 80,000 votes.

Black voters in those states, potentially energized by Obama, can erase that shortfall by themselves.

Obama also retains appeal to older, white moderate voters who twice put him in the White House. And his reputation for competence and compassion makes him an effective critic of Trump’s bungled response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The second member of this fantastic real-life foursome is his wife.

Michelle Obama grabbed headlines last week when Biden smiled at the idea of having her as his vice-presidential running mate.

“I’d take her in a heartbeat,” Biden said last week. “She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends.”

Since leaving office, the former first lady has stayed in the public eye and become the rare political leader who can fill arenas nationwide with female voters of all races.

Her memoir, “Becoming,” was the best-selling non-fiction book of 2019. A December Gallup survey said she is the “most admired woman in America,” a title she claimed for the second year in a row.

And she packs a political punch with her nonpartisan, nonprofit group to protect voting rights, “When We All Vote."

She started the group in 2018 and recently weighed in on the controversial decision by the GOP majority on the top Wisconsin court to insist on going ahead with the state’s primary election during the coronavirus.

"Americans should never have to choose between making their voices heard and keeping themselves and their families safe," Obama said, putting a new, compelling face in the front of the Democrats’ fight against voter suppression.

The third member of this Biden-backing group is Holder, Obama’s former attorney general. He is now chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, campaigning against GOP efforts to gerrymander congressional districts.

He is calling for an expansion of voting options including mail-in and absentee ballots. While these proposals are getting a closer look as a practical response to coronavirus, they could eliminate barriers to voting for elderly and minority voters if they become permanent.

The final member of the team is Stacey Abrams. She narrowly lost her race for governor of Georgia in 2018, but the powerful sight of a black woman doing well in southern politics made her a political rock star.

She wrote a best-selling book in 2018 and now heads up a non-profit encouraging people, particularly minorities, to fill out the 2020 Census so they can be accurately counted for federal aid and congressional reapportionment.

Biden has pledged to put a woman on his ticket and a black woman on the Supreme Court. Abrams’ name comes up regularly for consideration for both spots.

These four black champions hold the keys to a Biden victory by juicing Democrats’ energy and turnout in an election likely to be decided by which side gets out its voters.

Last year I wrote that “Obama has one more election to win for the Democrats.”

That is still true and a unified party behind Biden is ready to give him lots of help.

Double Standards Washington Post blasted for claiming 'Trump allies' are 'amplifying' Biden accuser Tara Reade

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Fox News

The Washington Post was slammed late Monday night for its bizarre framing of the latest developments that emerged surrounding the allegations made by Biden accuser Tara Reade.

Reade, who came forward last month accusing former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual assault as a Senate staffer in 1993, has had more corroborating evidence surface in recent days.

A clip from "Larry King Live" back in 1993 purportedly showing Reade's mother calling into the show anonymously and alluded to her daughter's "problems" she had with a "prominent senator" was brought to light on Friday. And on Monday, two more people, a former neighbor and a former colleague of Reade's, came forward to back her claims after conversations they've had back in the 90s.

However, a piece published by The Post raised eyebrows with its original headline that read, "Developments in allegations against Biden amplify efforts to question his behavior."

Not long after it was published, a new headline appeared in the report, "Trump allies highlight new claims regarding allegations against Biden."

"Some allies of President Trump pointed Monday to new claims by a woman who said she was told about sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden decades ago, renewing attention to questions about the past behavior of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee," Washington Post reporter Matt Viser began.

The transcript of the "Larry King Live" clip was first reported by The Intercept, the outlet founded by progressive journalist Glenn Greenwald, and conservative watchdog group the Media Research Center later found the clip in its archives. Rich McHugh of Business Insider, who previously worked at NBC News after having had collaborated with Ronan Farrow on the Harvey Weinstein scandal, was the journalist who broke Monday's bombshell report.

As far as actual "Trump allies," the Post cites tweets made by the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., in reaction to the developments and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who simply said the Biden allegations should be as scrutinized as the one leveled against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation.

The report went on to note that it has "been a topic for other top Democrats," pointing to remarks made by potential VP candidates Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer despite the widespread silence among top Democratic lawmakers about the Biden allegations.

Viser, who was one of the reporters behind the paper's first report about Reade's claims on Easter Sunday, also mentioned the misconduct allegations Trump has faced.

The Post was widely panned on social media, some even pointing out the drastically different coverage Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh received when he was accused of misconduct during his 2018 confirmation.

"As an editor, I regard this headline as a hate crime and I will be pressing charges first thing in the morning," Washington Examiner executive editor Seth Mandel reacted on Twitter.

Biden himself has not addressed the claims from Reade -- but his campaign vehemently has denied the allegations. Biden's Deputy Campaign Manager Kate Bedingfield said in a statement: "What is clear about this claim: it is untrue. This absolutely did not happen."

Reade on Monday confirmed to Fox News the accuracy of how her conversations with former next-door neighbor Lynda LaCasse and former colleague Lorraine Sanchez were described and expressed her deep gratitude toward them for coming forward.

"I am touched that they would step forward knowing the targeted harassment I have received since I made my history with Joe Biden public. I appreciate their candor and bravery," Reade said in a statement.

Earlier, a friend of Reade's claimed to have been told about the alleged assault at the time it happened but chose to remain anonymous, and her brother, Collin Moulton, recalled Reade describing an incident with Biden involving a "gym bag." The friend and Moulton both gave interviews to the Intercept.

LaCasse told Business Insider: "I remember her saying, here was this person that she was working for and she idolized him. And he kind of put her up against a wall. And he put his hand up her skirt and he put his fingers inside her. She felt like she was assaulted, and she really didn't feel there was anything she could do."

LaCasse said Reade was "upset" when she told her about the allegation and "the more she talked about it, the more she started crying." She said she remembered urging Reade to file a police report but did not recall specific details from the alleged incident, such as the location or remarks Biden allegedly made to Reade.

"I don't remember all the details," LaCasse told Business Insider. "I remember the skirt. I remember the fingers. I remember she was devastated."

LaCasse, a retired staffer of San Luis Obispo General Hospital, said she lived in the same apartment complex as Reade in Morro Bay, Calif. She recalled how the two of them had talked about "violent stories" they've experienced, which was when Reade told her "about the senator that she had worked for and he put his hand up her skirt."

"I personally am a Democrat, a very strong Democrat," LaCasse said. "I'm for Biden, regardless. But still, I have to come out and say this."

Reade's former neighbor said she "volunteered" to come forward, saying, "If this was me, I would want somebody to stand up for me. It takes a lot of guts to do what she's doing."

"I have to support her just because that's what happened," LaCasse continued. "We need to stand up and tell the truth."

Sanchez, who was working as a staffer for California State Senator Jack O'Connell, said she mentored and worked with Reade between 1994 and 1996.

Sanchez said she did not recall Reade referring to Biden by name but remembered "reassuring her that nothing like that would ever happen to her here in our office, that she was in a safe place, free from any sexual harassment."

"It takes great courage and strength to come forward," Sanchez said in praising Reade. "It's much easier to keep silent. However, I also understand the duty we have as women to share our story regardless of who the perpetrator may be."
