Prosecutor: Henrico teacher offered student A's in exchange for sex

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Hermitage High School history teacher was charged on Thursday with a sex crime against a juvenile after police were called to the school in February.
Police confirmed that Leonard E. Orange was arrested and charged after being named as a suspect in a sex offense report at the school on Feb. 6. Orange is listed on Hermitage High School's website as a social studies teacher.
Andy Jenks, the Director of Communications and Public Relations of Henrico County Public Schools, said Orange has been on leave since the school system was notified in a statement on Thursday:
Henrico Police and the Hermitage administration are taking this matter very seriously. Mr. Orange has been on leave since February, when we were first notified of concerns. At that time, we communicated with the families of his students about making arrangements for a substitute teacher. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we have no additional details to share at this time. However, we want our parent community to know that we share their concerns, and we thank those in local law enforcement for their partnership and continued efforts."

A Henrico County Police spokesperson also provided a statement with 8News on the arrest:
"Henrico Police responded to Hermitage High School on February 6, 2019, reference a sex offense being reported by a juvenile. Mr. Leonard Orange was identified as the suspect and has been charged with Indecent Liberties of a Minor by a Custodian," Lt. Lauren Hummel wrote in an email.
The prosecution said Orange had asked one of his students to give him oral sex in exchange for making sure she received A's the rest of the year.
Orange was released on a $10,000 bond. Orange can have contact with juveniles, just no contact with the victim.
The preliminary hearing is set for June 24 at 2:00 p.m.
