I used to be enamored with Doug Henning as a kid
He put on The Magic Show on Broadway and I found an article about it in one of our encyclopedias of all places. (The New Book of Knowledge Anniversary edition)
Aw damn it man I'm having a moment. Just looked at our three sets of encyclopedias and realized my Dad bought the internet for us kids when they had no money back in the day
We have these blue science encyclopedias and one of them literally says - We hope to travel to the moon one day and land there.

I'll have to check but I think they were published later than that. When you consider they didn't physically step on the moon until '69 and first orbited it in '68 (Apollo 8), it was only a talking point until then.
So the conjecture and speculation could and did happen anytime before 1968
