TROUTDALE, Ore. — Authorities say a teenage boy was hit and killed by a train as he was taking his senior photos.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called out to the tracks the Union Pacific train was on near the Columbia River Highway in Troutdale around 6 p.m. Saturday.

KOIN reports the 17-year-old student was declared dead at the scene. Union Pacific said none of the crew members were hurt.

Fox 12 reports it is not clear why he was unable to move out of the way of that train in time.

Officials believe the teen was taking senior photos with another person, a female photographer who was “very shaken up” by the accident.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the identity of the student. The Estacada School District released this statement, reading in part, "On Saturday a young member of the Estacada community passed away. The Estacada School District’s thoughts will continue to be with this family, and we offer our deepest condolences. Our entire district is grieved by this sudden loss."

The railroad said its thoughts were with the boy’s family and friends and it pleads with “parents, students and photographers to not take photos on or near the tracks.”

Much of the area where the incident occurred is fenced-off with no trespassing signs posted up and down the tracks.

"This is a tragedy for the family, it's a tragedy for the community, it's a tragedy for the train crew. I think it's important to get out to the public that, for everybody to remember, that the only thing that belongs on those tracks are trains," Steve Kreins, executive director of the Oregon Operator Lifesaver, said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is under investigation by its Vehicle Crash Team.
