It's because the United States subsidizes the cost of drugs specifically for the rest of the world by charging US consumers a premium. How else do you think Big Pharma can charge so little for a drug outside the US but charge us a 1000% premium?

    Spot on

The United States is exceptional in that it does not regulate or negotiate the prices of new prescription drugs when they come onto market. Other countries will task a government agency to meet with pharmaceutical companies and haggle over an appropriate price.
    But

These agencies will typically make decisions about whether these new drugs represent any improvement over the old drugs — whether they’re even worth bringing onto the market in the first place. They’ll pore over reams of evidence about drugs’ risks and benefits

Yeah, I love the new prescription drug advertisements that say "It'll get rid of that pesky hangnail, but there's several chances that it'll kill you in these 50 ways!"

And, don't take this prescription if you're allergic to it.
