Skynet Smart Homes, yes or no?

Is your home smart? Semi-smart? Or just a plain old house?

I'm leaning more towards embracing being able to do more stuff either remotely or by voice. I have a ways to go yet, but there are definitely things I want to add in the near future. So far we have a smart thermostat, we have a Ring video doorbell and security camera/light over the garage, we have interior security cameras (we still use them even though they were originally installed to keep an eye on the dogs when they were younger more so than for security, and we have three Alexa devices in the house.

What I want to get next is a smart lock to replace the deadbolt in the front. I like the idea that you can work it remotely and that it will negate having to need keys, especially since the kid is always losing hers. I'm also looking at a security floodlight/camera system for the backyard and I want to get either smart plugs, switches, or light bulbs to be able to automate some lighting in the house.

Where is everyone else on smart home tech?

Just a plain ol' house. The only smart devices I have are smartphones and a tablet. I've got a Ring video doorbell that I haven't installed, but that's as far as it goes for me.

I have a programmable thermostat but it attaches to nothing but the furnace. I did have X-10 - a first attempt at a "smart home" about 15 years ago, but it was problematic and I just didn't use it. I have a motion sensor light in the back - that's about as smart as this house gets.

I'm more against the items that listen. I do love my ring

I like a certain aspect of it, but I have no trust for Google or Alexa to not spy on me for marketing information.

I like the idea of it, but not allowing any company to listen in my house

You just make sure you talk about your crime plots in different rooms

it's not even that.. After Snowden I have no doubt as to what lengths the government or businesses will go to listen in to our personal worlds. Hell the Chinese had Huwaie putting a special spy chip in every device they sold. Now we have devices like Google and Alexa that can activated remotely by the mother ship? Fuck no man..

I've got a free Google Home but I haven't even set it up. I've been dragging my heels buying any smart home products. There was a flash sale on two smart lightbulbs that I can connect for super cheap but I haven't even got around to setting them up

I'd really like a smart thermostat, but my townhouse is heated by baseboards on separate thermostats in each room, so it's not possible as far as I know (or maybe it is, but I'm not buying and installing 3-4 different thermostats)

We have smart bulbs in 3 rooms, two Alexa devices and 4 web/app-enabled cameras. Love the bulbs, don't use Alexa for much except being lazy on the smart bulbs, and the cameras were only $25/ea to be able to check on the cat.

I have an Echo Dot I got for Christmas a couple years ago. It's still in the box next to the box of smart plugs.

At some point I will get a couple of Wifi cameras to keep tabs on the island spot when I'm not there but I really have no interest in any of the "listening" devices. I even have the wifi updates turned off on my TV.
