The reality is that if the curve is flattened, then that means that transmission of the virus is decreasing.

If wearing a mask helps to prevent transmission, then it follows that the curve will flatten.

At the moment that does not appear to be happening..... There is a level for understanding high rates of transmission in developing countries but not in what are supposed to be the world's leading countries.

Correct. That's why some experts are saying that we will be living with this for years. Prepare to spend a long time masking up and having your government continually increase the restrictions on you. Because it's for your own good. In the name of public safety.

Let's hope you are not being facetious....

Not true though in your prediction.... here in Western Australia, we have gone well past that and the only "restriction" being government advised is to distance properly.

Oxford coronavirus vaccine triggers strong immune response, trial shows
    By Bevan Shields
    July 21, 2020 — 2.43am
London: British scientists have made a breakthrough in the race to find a coronavirus vaccine, with the first round of human trials showing the shot is safe and induces the strong immune response needed to fend off infection.

The results are highly significant because the University of Oxford vaccine, known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is considered one of the leading candidates in the global race to bring the devastating pandemic to an end.

97.23% of all deaths in the United States according to the CDC (from the most recent numbers I could find, as of July 22nd), were people older than 45 years of age. Then if you drop down one more age bracket, 99.1% of all deaths in the US were from people 35 years old and up. So yes, statistically, this disease pretty much only affects older people, but as with any disease, it can affect anyone at any time, but the numbers don't lie, if you are under the age of 35, you have almost zero chance of dying from this. You can't point out a few anomalies and say "SEE! SEE! EVERYONE IS DYING FROM IT!"

If you practice good hygiene and common sense, then your chance of dying from this if you are younger really is basically zero.

EDIT: and using those same numbers, there are 130,250 deaths to date attributed to COVID in the United States. In that same time frame in the US, there have been 138,829 deaths to pneumonia and 6,553 deaths from influenza (starting on Feb 1st, the tail end of flu season, so that's not total flu deaths in the US for this past flu season. The CDC estimated that there were at least 24,000 deaths in the US related to the flu during the 2019-2020 season).

We have a different attitude over here. If a single family dies in a car crash in Victoria it's called a "horror weekend". We're not used to or accepting of large numbers of people dying ( for any reason)

Despite having one of the strongest restrictions in the world this has ripped through and killed 170 people across the country and put many thousands in Hospital. We've just suspended non-urgent surgery to cope with the numbers. there are reports of recoverees having long-term negative effects for many months and apparently it's pretty horrible being on a ventilator.

It's also recently put a bunch of young people in hospital in my state. 10 are in their 20s, 2 under 18, 1 under 10.

It's unacceptable and an absolute disaster

It's the population difference. Nearly 350 million in the US versus 25 million in Australia. Metro New York City alone has 18.3 million people in it. Throw in another moderately sized city and those two metro areas alone top the population of your entire country. Just from car accidents there were almost 39,000 deaths in the US last year. With a massive population comes a lot more death, whether it's from accidents, natural causes, or disease. It's not that we are "used to it" or that we think it's "acceptable", it's just life. People die. I dunno what else to say about it.

And as for those young people you mentioned in Australia, did they have underlying conditions? Were they already sick with something else? All that makes a big difference in people that are under the age of 35 getting the disease bad enough to require hospitalization.

I heard the latest was 75% of recoveries were showing signs of pretty significant heart damage.
