A prominent Russian scientist who was working on a COVID-19 vaccine was found dead with a stab wound after plummeting out his window in St. Petersburg, according to news reports.

Alexander “Sasha” Kagansky, 45, was in his underwear when he fell to his death from his 14th-floor apartment, according to the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets.

The scientist also suffered a stab wound, police said.

Police believe there was a scuffle before Kagansky fell from the building, reports said.

Russian police say they are investigating Kagansky’s death as a possible homicide and questioning a 45-year-old man as a potential suspect, e2news.com said.

Kagansky, best known for his work on cancer research, was an assistant professor in Vladivostok and had spent 13 years working in Edinburgh, Scotland, until 2017, the outlet said.

He was most recently working as director of the Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine at Russia’s Far Eastern Federal University.

He had been working on developing a vaccine against the coronavirus, e2news said.

Kagansky’s body was found by a neighbor on Zamshin Street, the report said.

If that had happened here it would be listed as a covid death.

Russia has admitted its coronavirus death toll is more than three times higher than previously reported.

New figures show that more than 186,000 Russians have died from the virus, up from the 55,265 the country officially reported.

This means that Russia has the third-highest number of fatalities, moving ahead of India and sitting behind only the US and Brazil.

Russia has reported more than three million infections since the beginning of the pandemic but its comparatively low fatality rate had raised eyebrows.

President Vladimir Putin said it was because the country had handled the pandemic so well, but others said it was partly due to the fact that an autopsy had to list COVID-19 as the main cause of death for it to be counted.

On Monday, government statistics agency Rosstat said the number of deaths from all causes between January and November had risen by 229,700 compared to the same period in the previous year, according to a report by news agency AFP.

And Russia's deputy prime minister Tatiana Golikova said "more than 81%" of that increased mortality was due to COVID-19, meaning that more than 186,000 Russians had died from the virus in that period.

Her assessment has not yet been reflected in any of Russia's official coronavirus tallies.



Russia's restrictions have been light compared with many other countries and Mr Putin has said that if people follow the rules, lockdowns like those seen in Europe will not be needed.

Like many other countries, Russia has high hopes for vaccination, particularly its Sputnik V jab, named after the Soviet satellite.

High-risk workers aged 16 to 60 without chronic illnesses were called up first when the programme began earlier in December, but people older than 60 were called up last weekend.

Reports have said that 700,000 doses have been released, although there are no official figures for how many people have been vaccinated and there are concerns about a high degree of vaccine scepticism.

Southern California hospitals, already overwhelmed by coronavirus patients, are now facing a new problem -- a shortage of oxygen, according to a report.

Officials say they're having trouble getting the necessary amount of oxygen to critically ill coronavirus patients, with supply issues causing at least five Los Angeles County hospitals to declare an "internal disaster" on Sunday, which included turning away ambulances.

The shortage of oxygen isn't the only problem, officials say. There’s also a lack of canisters, as well as aging hospital pipes that are breaking down and can't maintain sufficient pressure due to the huge amounts of oxygen needed to keep up with the high number of patients, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Dr. Christina Ghaly, L.A. County health services director, said because of a high flow through the pipes, they freeze, "and obviously, if it freezes, then you can’t have good flow of oxygen."

One of the hospitals facing oxygen issues is Memorial Hospital of Gardena, about 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Chief Executive Kevan Metcalfe said the hospital is low on oxygen, and if it runs out, it could result in "deep, deep trouble," according to the Times. Coronavirus patients generally need 60 to 80 liters of oxygen a minute, while other patients may receive six liters per minute.

The oxygen problems come as Los Angeles County has seen a recent surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that more than 7,000 COVID-19 patients were currently hospitlaized with the virus, with about 20% of those in the intensive care unit.

The number of hospitalizations reported Tuesday was nearly a 1,000% increase from two months ago, health officials said. With more patients potentially on the way, officials worry the problem could get worse.

"Our health care workers are overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients and this current path of surging COVID-19 hospitalizations is not sustainable," said Barbara Ferrer, L.A. County‘s public health director.

She urged residents to stay home instead of attending a party this New Year's Eve.

"Even if you believe your life isn't at risk, actions that defy public health guidance certainly put other lives in danger," Ferrer said. "Make ending this deadly surge part of your New Year's resolution."
