A dad who travelled across the sea on a jet ski to visit his girlfriend has been jailed for breaking Covid restrictions.
Dale McLaughlan, 28, made the 25-mile trip from Whithorn, Dumfriesshire, to the Isle of Man on Friday December 11.
He initially believed the journey would take him just 40 minutes but it took an astonishing four-and-a-half hours to cross the Irish Sea.
The island’s Douglas Courthouse heard McLaughlan arrived safely on the island and then walked 15 miles to the town of Douglas where his girlfriend lives.
It emerged McLaughlan was previously given a four-week pass to work as a roofer on the island but his application to return was rejected.
He then took matters into his own hand and made the trip by jet ski but police caught up with him and after identification checks, McLaughlan was arrested.
The 28-year-old’s defence lawyer said he suffered from depression and was struggling being without his partner.
McLaughlan admitted arriving unlawfully on the island at Douglas Courthouse and was jailed for four weeks.
Deputy High Bailiff Christopher Arrowsmith said McLaughlan had made a "deliberate and intentional attempt to circumnavigate" border restrictions.
He said the "planned" journey put the community and the 28-year-old at a "very real risk of harm."
McLaughlan's mum Allison said she didn't know about the jetski and slammed her son as he could have "killed himself.
Speaking from her home in Irvine, Ayrshire, Allison said: "He was supposed to be going over for work but as far as I know they put it off till January 11.
"I didn’t even know about the jetski.
"I just don’t know why he did it - he could have killed himself.
"He’ll be missing his kids over Christmas."
4 and a half hours across the irish sea on a jetski is way more dangerous
One assumes the isle of Man is covid free...

A coronavirus-obsessed Wisconsin man who authorities say stabbed four of his family members -- killing two of them -- earlier this year, was ordered this week to spend the rest of his life in a mental health institution, according to reports.
Adam Roth, 36, of Waukesha, was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in the March attack, which authorities said was linked to his worries about the virus.
Waukesha County Deputy District Attorney Ted Szczupakiewicz had asked for a lifetime commitment during a Monday sentencing hearing. He requested institutional care as opposed to conditional release.
“There is clear and convincing evidence that if Mr. Roth would be conditionally released, he would pose a significant risk," Szczupakiewicz said. "And that’s not a risk, at this point, I think anyone would hope the court would take."
According to a criminal complaint, Roth and his wife, Dominique Roth, were in the kitchen eating on March 10, when he began stabbing her. When Dominique's mother, Gilane Popanda, and Gilane's other daughters, Desiree and Deidre, told him to stop, he "turned on everybody," the complaint added.
Deputies arrived at the home to find a woman bleeding at the end of the driveway, and another woman bleeding against a truck, FOX 6 News of Milwaukee reported. After entering the residence, authorities found "a large amount of blood" on a staircase and hallway, according to a criminal complaint. The complaint added that after deputies shouted into the home, a man, identified as Roth stepped out from the upstairs hallway, covered in blood, and holding a knife.
"Alright, I'm done now," Roth said to deputies after they instructed him to drop the weapon, according to the station. He also told a detective the day after the stabbing that the coronavirus “was coming and I had to save them.”
Dominique Roth, 34, and her sister Deidre Popanda, 26, died from their injuries, as did a family dog, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office. Desirae Popanda, 36, and Gilane Popanda, 62, suffered significant injuries and were rushed to local area hospitals, authorities said.
"I don't know that in my 28 years here in the DA's office I've seen a more horrific crime than this," Szczupakiewicz added.
Roth was charged in March with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of mistreatment of animals/causing death by use of a dangerous weapon, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
He pleaded guilty but not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to the first four counts as part of a plea agreement. The other charges were dismissed but read into the court record, the paper reported.
Roth’s attorney, Cameron Weitzner, did not challenge the prosecution’s requested sentence.
“This case is about an individual who is suffering from mental illness and was suffering in a way that I don’t think any of us can understand,” Weitzner said.

Fair comment! But neither of those are contagious and can spread and kill like wildfire because of not wearing masks, not distancing or not isolating. Deaths attributed to cancer and heart disease are in a totally different category.
Throughout the world, CV19 has been spread by those infected already and because many will NOT adhere to basic principles of hygiene eg masks, distancing and isolating when infectious.
The US may have got caught in this worse than many other nations but now India and Indonesia (for two) are suffering very badly.
I do not understand why some people do not take CV19 as seriously as it should be taken..... a "pandemic" is not declared for the fun of it.

Australians’ trust in governments surges to ‘extraordinary’ high amid Covid
Trust in government has soared to an “extraordinary” high during the pandemic, upending years of scepticism about Australian politicians, the annual survey of social attitudes has revealed.
Initial findings from the Scanlon Foundation’s Mapping Social Cohesion Report show 85% support for the federal government’s response to the pandemic, while backing for some state governments exceeded 90%.
Trust in the federal government to generally “do the right thing” was at a record high 55%, topping the previous record of 48% in 2009. The measure had averaged just 32% over the past 13 years.
Does Australia trust its public service? PM's department inflates survey results
“That’s quite an extraordinary finding,” said Andrew Markus, an emeritus professor at Monash University and the survey’s lead researcher.
“Usually we get very little change in the surveys from just one year to the next. Now, of course, we don’t often get a pandemic. So you would expect a shift in opinion.
“But the shift in opinion is moving in a positive direction with regards to government.”

Well deserved too. Our state leaders across all levels of politics did a very good job, and even Morrison, our PM as well. The contrast with most of the rest of the world is stark.
