News Protesters clash with Minneapolis cops after George Floyd’s death in police custody

By David Aaro | Fox News

Chaos broke out on Tuesday night in Minneapolis as protesters took to the streets to demand action after the death of George Floyd in police custody a day earlier.

Police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades on some protesters, reports said. The protest started peacefully but the situation deteriorated and some demonstrators were seen breaking windows of police cars and hurling rocks, reports said.

Floyd, 46, died Monday night and video later emerged showing the man on the ground with a police officer pressing his knee against Floyd's neck. Footage released of the incident showed Floyd shouting, “I cannot breathe” and “Don’t kill me.”

Officers had responded to a call from a grocery store that claimed Floyd had allegedly used a forged check.

Floyd's death sparked new tensions between police and the black community.

“We’re here to let them know this can’t be tolerated, there will be severe consequences if they continue to kill us this will not go on another day,” a protester said, according to Minneapolis's WCCO-TV.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., released a statement on Tuesday and called it another "horrifying and gutwrenching instance of an African American man dying."

The protests began on the south side of Minneapolis, near where Floyd was arrested. Protesters were seen sitting in the crosswalks and using their own vehicles to block traffic. Organizers emphasized keeping this protest peaceful, but chaos began to swell during the day, according to Fox 9 Minneapolis.

Some carried signs reading “I can’t breathe” and “Jail killer KKKops," according to the Guardian.

Protesters continued to block traffic during the evening. As the crowds grew, the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota reminded protesters to keep their distance to help stop the spread of COVID-19, WCCO reported.

The sounds of motorcycles revving were also captured on video as they sent crowds running during the protest, with many demonstrators confused as to what was happening, according to the station.

The protesters later moved toward the Minneapolis Police Department's 3rd precinct where crowds swelled. People were seen throwing rocks at the building, as well as at police cruisers -- with one being sprayed with paint, according to FOX 9.

Protesters threw water and milk bottles at the officers, shouting “pigs” and “how could you," the Guardian reported. Police fired green teargas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd approaching the station.

“It’s real ugly. The police have to understand that this is the climate they have created, this is the climate they created,” another protester said, according to WCCO.

As rains came down in the city, demonstrators were seen using carts at a Target store as cover before police launched tear gas.

The four officers were terminated Tuesday. Klobuchar called a step in the right direction on Tuesday.

"Those responsible must still be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," she added. "Justice must be served."

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., later called the actions by police "a disgusting display."

"I’m here on the southside, helping people as I can with milk, water, and towels," she said. "So far, I have been unable to prevent the police from firing indiscriminately into the crowd. Moments ago, I held a towel to a teenage girls head as blood poured from it"

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced Tuesday that the officers involved had been fired after they were initially placed on paid leave. The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) are investigating Floyd's death.

Ben Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family, told TMX.news the officer shown in the video with his knee on Floyd's neck should be charged with murder and that the other officers should be charged as accomplices.

"They were supposed to protect and serve citizens like George," Crump said. "We in black America, we are done dying at the hands of the people who are supposed to protect and serve us."

Police said the man appeared to be intoxicated and that he resisted arrest, although it wasn't clear if that was accurate. Body cameras were rolling the whole time, according to police spokesman John Elder.

Floyd's death has prompted comparisons to that of Eric Garner, an African-American man whose death was brought on by an illegal chokehold during a 2014 interaction with New York City police. A video showed Garner repeatedly stating "I can't breathe" while being choked on the ground.

The president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Lt. Bob Kroll, said that the union intends to provide full support to the officers involved in the incident -- who have yet to be identified by authorities.

“Now is not the time rush to judgment and immediately condemn our officers,” Kroll said, according to WCCO. “An in-depth investigation is underway. Our officers are fully cooperating. We must review all video. We must wait for the medical examiner’s report.”

Floyd was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where he died at 9:25 p.m. on Monday. The cause of his death is currently pending further testing and investigation, according to the medical examiner.

From my understanding, cops are constantly told you don't put a knee on the neck or use chokes unless someone is at risk of having the upper hand in a fight, you can crush their wind pipe. Asphyxia is a hot topic for cops. Nevermind the guy was apparently saying he couldn't breath...

This cop has the guy cuffed, hands in his pockets, knee on the neck. I'm having a very hard time imagining how body cam footage could justify the cop. Word is it's the third time this cop has done something similar in 15 years.

ten years ago, cops in minneapolis (same city) killed a man in custody with a similar 'knee in the back while prone' restraint. they ended up paying out $3 million and guaranteeing training to prevent that type of thing from happening again. oops.

Deadly shooting, arson, looting and armed vigilantes grip city after George Floyd’s death

By Edmund DeMarche | Fox News

Protests in Minneapolis over the death of George Floyd took a dramatic turn for the worse Wednesday night as city police responded to stores in the city being looted and burned as well as a deadly shooting at a protest location.

Multiple reports indicated that Mayor Jacob Frey reached out to Gov. Tim Walz to deploy the National Guard to the city. The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News seeking comment.

Social media users posted videos on Twitter that showed burning businesses and looters entering a local Target store and making their way out with bags full of items.

At least one group of armed men was seen outside a strip mall in Minneapolis on Wednesday night amid the looting.

Protests in the city first erupted Tuesday after video emerged of a police officer with his knee pressed against Floyd's neck while the man was lying in the street, in custody. Protesters have called for the officers involved -- four of whom have been fired -- to be charged in his death.

The fatal shooting late Wednesday night was connected to looting at a pawn shop, the Star Tribune reported. The store's owner reportedly fired the shot. Police said one person was in custody.

Max Nesterak, a reporter for the Minnesota Reformer, interviewed a group of armed men outside a tobacco shop who said they agree with the protests but not the looting. They said police in the city have been overextended and they stopped at the tobacco shop because they were told the business owners were desperate to protect their store.

“These guys are out here with machetes, with shattered windows trying to keep looters out because cops can’t get in here,” one of the armed men said. “So I figured before there were cops, there were Americans. So here we are.”

Another armed man said, “We definitely don’t agree with the looting, but we do agree with the cause and the protest.”

Some commenters on social media worried that armed citizens could escalate the situation.

Looting has been recorded at a Target store off East Lake Street and an AutoZone was set on fire near a police precinct.

Officers could be seen surrounding the precinct but did not attempt to intervene in the looting. Earlier, some protesters skirmished with officers, who fired rubber bullets and tear gas in a repeat of Tuesday night's confrontation. One reporter posted an image on Twitter of Minnesota State troopers taking cover after the sound of gunfire rang out from a nearby parking lot early Thursday.

FOX 9 Minneapolis reported that fire crews worked to put out the fire at AutoZone, which is close to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct. Walz took to Twitter late Wednesday to tell people in the area to leave and called the unfolding situation “extremely dangerous.”

“For everyone’s safety, please leave the area and allow firefighters and paramedics to get to the scene,” he posted. Other stores that were involved in looting included a Cub Foods and a Dollar Tree.

Fox News’ Mike Tobin, reporting live from a protest, said he was caught in the crossfire and said he felt pepper spray get into his eyes.

“Some of the flashbangs have been deployed, primarily from the police on the rooftop,” Tobin said at one point, standing with a news camera and microphone between the lines of protesters and police officers.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in police custody and a citizen’s cell phone video showed an officer kneeling on Floyd 's neck for almost eight minutes as he eventually became unresponsive. Floyd was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police had responded to an alleged forgery taking place. A man matching Floyd's description allegedly used a counterfeit bill.

The officer and three others were fired Tuesday. They were identified as Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng, FOX 9 reported.

On Wednesday, Mayor Jacob Frey called for Chauvin to be criminally charged. Federal investigators have joined the investigation into Floyd's death.

Protesters also gathered Wednesday evening at Chauvin's suburban home as well as the Minneapolis home of Mike Freeman, the Hennepin County prosecutor who would make a charging decision in the case. No violence was reported in those protests.

The FBI has been called in to aid local police in the investigation into Floyd's death, which immediately drew comparisons to the case of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in 2014 in New York City after he was placed in a chokehold by police and pleaded for his life, heard in another video saying, “I can’t breathe.”

President Trump said he ordered the FBI and Justice Department to investigate the death.

"At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd," Trump tweeted.

Fox News' Danielle Wallace and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Colin Kaepernick Says It's Time for Revolution in Wake of George Floyd's Death

    By the TMZ Staff

Colin Kaepernick's not here for peaceful protesting in the wake of George Floyd being killed by a cop, because he says civility led to his death ... so it's time to revolt.

The former NFL star is addressing critics of the unrest this week in Minneapolis ... and he says they just don't get it, because all the rational discussions have not stopped the horrendous killings of black men, so it's time to ramp up the protests and not worry about keeping the peace.

Kaepernick says in a tweet ... "When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction."

He adds ... "The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears, because your violence has brought this resistance."

The "your" here is obviously the police, and Colin suggests it's due time to respond to the violence with violence, saying ... "We have the right to fight back!"

As you know, Kaepernick's been outspoken about police brutality for years, and began silently protesting by taking a knee during The National Anthem while playing for the 49ers in 2016.

The move made him a lightning rod in the discussion of police brutality and the treatment of black people in America, and many believe it resulted in him being blackballed from the NFL.

Of course, the disturbing parallel of a cop kneeling on George Floyd's carotid artery with Kaepernick peacefully kneeling to protest such violence has not been lost on people.

So, he's making his message clear -- he's done with peace ... and he's encouraging others to follow his lead.

Afaik, calling for a revolution isn't illegal, at least in respect to the Constitution. State laws may vary, I dunno.

Funny, the founding fathers were all for overthrowing a tyrannical government. Hell, that's how the nation was created. See how far we have fallen from the original principles that this country was founded upon?
