War Chicago weekend shootings: 62 shot, 15 fatally, in violence across city

By Will Jones, Jessica D'Onofrio and Jesse Kirsch, ABC 7 Chicago Digital Team

CHICAGO (WLS) -- For a second straight weekend, violence in Chicago has impacted the lives of dozens of people.

According to Chicago police, 62 people were shot and 15 were killed between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Three of those fatal shootings victims were minors, police said.

Community activist Andrew Holmes shared a picture of 10-year-old Lena Nunez, who was shot and killed while visiting her uncle's home in Logan Square Saturday night. A stray bullet came through the window.

Holmes said the family is heartbroken.

"They just can't believe that she went over there to her uncle's house and with her other relatives and she was just waiting on her dad to come pick her up and then this incident happened," Holmes said.

A vigil for Nunez is planned for Monday night.

"If the people in our community come out and show support and be the voice, I think we can change this," said Angee Gonzalez Rodriguez.

The shooting happened just after 1-year-old Sincere Gaston was shot and killed while riding home from the laundromat with his mother in the Englewood neighborhood.

"Sincere deserved to live his life and grow up in the Englewood which I know and love," said Alderman Stephanie Coleman, 16th Ward.

There is a growing reward for the arrest and conviction of the boy's killer. The newly formed reward group "I'm Telling, Don't Shoot" is putting up $25,000.

"This is a group of business owners that are pretty much fed up as it relates to the gun violence in our communities," said Early Walker, a philanthropist and business owner.

"I want to urge anybody that know something, say something. This could be you," said Tiffany Henyard, a business owner.

In Englewood, an 8-year-old girl was injured in a shooting Saturday night. A stray bullet grazed her on her head while she was sitting on the couch in a home, she said.

"This is our community and we refused to let crime take over the narrative of our community and I often say this I am proud to be the daughter of Englewood because good is in Englewood and we are changing the narrative," Coleman said.

There have been some activists getting some press saying exactly that. "If this child had been killed by a cop, there'd be 10,000 people marching on this street"

And then... crickets from the powerful and the activists alike.

    Baffling.

Sad Chicago bloodbath leaves several children dead as notoriously violent Fourth of July weekend approaches

By Hollie McKay | Fox News

Mekhi James, Sincere Gaston and Lena Marie Nunez were all killed by gunfire over the past week in Chicago

The gun violence in the streets of Chicago claimed the lives of three minors – with two others wounded in the mayhem – over the past week alone.

Ten-year-old girl Lena Marie Nunez was killed when a stray bullet shattered the window and struck her head while she was inside her second-floor family apartment in the 3500 block of West Dickens on Saturday night. The charred glass wounded her 8-year-old cousin, police said.

That same day, a 20-month-old baby, Sincere Gaston, was shot dead in broad daylight while strapped in a car seat alongside his mother in the Englewood neighborhood. Hours earlier, a 17-year-old boy died of a gunshot wound after becoming implicated in a fight while in a "large crowd," authorities stated.

Lena Marie Nunez was struck by a stray bullet in her home on Saturday night

"Too many times children are killed," Police Chief Fred Waller said at a news conference after the 20-month-old died. "It seems like just yesterday, and it was actually last Saturday, I was in front of you all talking about a 3-year-old kid. … When is this gonna stop?"

But just two hours after the killing of Nunez, another 8-year-old girl in the West Englewood area – also inside a home as per local media reports – when a random bullet came through the window and grazed her head. She was immediately transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where she is said to be in a "fair condition."

Sincere Gaston was tragically killed by gunfire in Chicago last week

    The incidents remain under investigation.

Moreover, the tragic spate of shootings come less than a week after 3-year-old Mekhi James was killed on Chicago's West Side, the victim of a drive-by shooting.

According to an analysis of crime statistics by the Chicago Tribune, the past week marked the most violent in Chicago since at least 2012 – with some 106 people shot, 14 of them fatally.

"Through last Sunday, the city saw a jump of more than 25 percent in the number of homicides, reaching 295, which is 60 more than the same period a year ago," the publication wrote. "Ninety-six of those occurred during a 28-day stretch that covered most of June, the statistics show."

Julio Rivera, editorial director for crime and politics digital publication Reactionary Times, said that crime in Chicago is reaching deeply concerning levels.

“Overall Crime in May of 2020 versus May of 2019, 2020 has been a particularly violent year as the 1,127 shooting victims through May of 2020 represent a 30 percent increase versus 2019,” he told Fox News. “It has only gotten worst in June, climaxing with Chicago's most violent weekend since 2012 between 6 p.m. Friday, June 19th and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, June 21st, that saw at least 106 people shot, with at least 14 fatalities.”

But with the pending July 4 weekend ahead, notoriously the worst few days for violence in the Windy City, the worst may still be yet to come.

But especially tragic in the city's protracted gun violence are the young victims caught in the crossfire.

For one, prominent Chicago activist Diane Latiker has erected a shrine in memory of Chicago's children killed by bullets – adorned with hundreds of names embossed into stones and the jarring reality that there are now more names to engrave.

"It's like it takes a piece of your soul," Latiker told the local Fox 32 affiliate. "Because whoever is on that stone, somebody loved them."

It's really sad that all these assholes will go out and stage nationwide riots peaceful protests over arguably bad people, most career criminals, yet there's not a peep over these innocent kids getting caught up in this bullshit black-on-black violence and paying the ultimate price. It's absolutely sickening. And I can't believe the families of these children don't make a bigger stink about it.

A shame there needs to be a fucking narrative for the left to actually care about something.

    Governor J.B. Pritzker
    Governor of Illinois
    Chicago, Illinois 60601

    Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
    Mayor of Chicago
    Chicago, Illinois 60602

Dear Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot:

I write to you today to call your attention to and urge action on the devastating violence in Chicago. While I have been heartened to see crime reductions nationally the last few years, I have been horrified by the continued violence in this great American city.

I recently read an article from the Chicago Sun-Times on June 8, 2020, “18 murders in 24 hours: Inside the most violent day in 60 years in Chicago,” which discussed the severe crime and lack of law and order in our Nation’s third largest city. The article details how “85 people were shot and 24 killed the previous weekend, the most in modern history in Chicago.” Your lack of leadership on this important issue continues to fail the people you have sworn to protect. I am concerned it is another example of your lack of commitment to the vulnerable citizens who are victims of this violence and a lack of respect for the men and women in law enforcement. The article recounts the following horrors:

    A hardworking father killed.

A West Side high school student murdered.

A college freshman who hoped to become a correctional officer, gunned down.

18 people killed Sunday, May 31, the single most violent day in Chicago in six decades.

The weekend of May 29, 25 people were killed and another 85 wounded by gunfire.

The most violent weekend in Chicago’s modern history, stretching police resources that were already thin because of protests and looting.

Violence and death, which are disproportionately harming young African Americans, are tragic and unacceptable, particularly on such a shocking scale. According to the Chicago Sun Times, “shootings across the City increased by 71 percent last month,” and just this past weekend 102 people were shot in the city’s most violent weekend of the year. A 3-year old toddler was killed. More Americans have been killed in Chicago than in combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq combined since September 11, 2001, a deadly trend that has continued under your tenure.

The American people (hardworking taxpayers) send you millions of dollars in Federal funding each year to support public safety in Chicago. In 2018 and 2019, the City of Chicago benefited from $136 million in funding from the Urban Area Security Initiative Grant Program, and another $68 million was recently announced for Chicago from this important program. The Department of Justice awarded and is in the process of awarding nearly $20 million to support law enforcement and law-enforcement related entities in the City of Chicago and Cook County across 2019 and 2020, including resources for combating opioid abuse and recidivism reduction. The Department of Labor has also awarded funding to programs targeting prisoner re-entry and recidivism reduction in the Chicago area. My Administration allocated $898.6 million to the City of Chicago and Cook County from the Coronavirus Relief Fund, which helps support your first responders on the front lines. In the absence of any modicum of leadership, however, these substantial sums of taxpayer money are not being turned into results, and the safety of your most vulnerable communities continues to deteriorate. These funds are in addition to those collected through your combined insatiable appetite to tax the people of Illinois and Chicago.

I will continue to lead the way to support historically disadvantaged communities and would welcome your help in these endeavors. In December 2018, I signed into law the First Step Act, marking the first major reforms to our criminal justice system in over a decade. This brings historic reforms to make our justice system fairer and to help inmates successfully transition back into society by providing prisoners with a second chance through rehabilitative programs and fair sentencing. Additionally, when I signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, we created Opportunity Zones. Nationwide, nearly 9,000 communities have designated Opportunity Zones, including over 130 in Chicago, which are incentivizing investments in areas that have been forgotten for far too long. My Administration has also provided robust, unprecedented support to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Recently, on June 16, I signed an Executive Order advancing important reforms to elevate a noble profession and strengthen the essential bond of trust between police officers and the communities in which they serve. My Administration continues to work closely with Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and others across the political spectrum to advance further policy improvements and meaningful reforms.

Unlike previous Administrations of both parties, I am willing to tackle unsolved challenges. If you are willing to put partisanship aside, we can revitalize distressed neighborhoods in Chicago, together. But to succeed, you must establish law and order. The combination of crime, high State and local taxes, and onerous State and local government regulations have caused thousands of Illinoisans to flee to other States. Between 2010 and 2019, Illinois lost more of its population than any other state in the Nation. If you are interested, I am willing to ask members of my Cabinet to meet with you and help devise a plan to make Chicago safe, since a successful formula has escaped both you and your predecessors. My Administration would also welcome the opportunity to engage with you and your colleagues as you develop bipartisan policy recommendations to improve policing and make our great cities safer for all.

Unfortunately, you continue to put your own political interests ahead of the lives, safety, and fortunes of your own citizens. The people of Chicago deserve better.

    Sincerely,

    Donald J. Trump

And the most horrible thing about those kids' deaths? Their funerals won't be televised, no high profile speakers will show up to lament their passing and condemn the gang violence that took their lives... certainly not the same media and personalities that showed up for George Floyd's funeral, who had been arrested numerous times and held a loaded gun to a pregnant woman's belly during a robbery. Yeah, George Floyd's a fucking saint, but screw these kids who never hurt a god damned fly.
