SJW Adele bikini pic called out for ‘cultural appropriation’

By Nate Day | Fox News

    Adele is taking heat.

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter took to Instagram on Sunday to pay tribute to Notting Hill Carnival, which was all but canceled this year as a result of the spread of coronavirus.

The carnival is meant to celebrate Caribbean culture and has taken place since 1966, according to BBC. This year, the experience was virtual.

"Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London 🇬🇧🇯🇲," Adele wrote in the photo's caption.

In the photo, the "Hello" singer donned a bikini top decorated with the Jamaican flag and wore her hair in Bantu knots, a traditional African hairstyle.

The British pop star was accused of cultural appropriation after donning the look.

"Dear white people, please just be yourselves and stop it for good with cultural appropriation," someone commented, per People. "Adele the bantu knots were unnecessary. The Jamaican flag bikini top was unnecessary... Please just stop it."

Another said that "black women are discriminated against for wearing cultural hairstyles like bantu knots and locs but white people are not, that’s not fair and that’s why people are pissed off."

There were a handful of supporters, however.

"I’m from the Caribbean and this is why we have festivals/carnival," said one. "For others to appreciate and celebrate our culture. Nothing inappropriate here."

"WE LOVE SEEING OUR FLAG EVERYWHERE!!!!" another insisted. "This made me smile. It shows the impact my little island has on the whole world. How influential we truly are."

Reps for Adele did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

This Morning fans rage as white guests call cultural appropriation 'nonsense'

By Ailbhe MacMahon, Showbiz & TV Reporter - The Daily Star

This Morning viewers were left furious earlier today as two white guests on the show blasted cultural appropriation, branding the term as "nonsense".

India Willoughby and Andrew Neil appeared on the show with Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, discussing the current affairs of the day.

Near the end of the segment, the conversation turned to a recent photo shared by Adele, dressed up to celebrate the annual weekend of the Notting Hill Carnival street party.

The singer was accused of cultural appropriation after sharing the photo, as her hair was styled in Bantu knots, and she wore a Jamaican-print bikini.

Cultural appropriation can be defined as the wearing of cultural identity markers associated with minority communities by people of privilege.

When asked whether the outfit was cultural appropriation, India made it clear she didn't agree with the concept of "appropriation".

Raising her voice, she said: "I don't understand the phrase cultural appropriation.

"I would rather call it cultural appreciation."

She added: "I don't understand the problem with it."

The journalist also compared Adele's wearing of Bantu knots, a traditional African hairstyle with a deep-rooted history, to black women wearing blonde wigs.

Fellow guest Andrew agreed with India, saying: "I'm so fed up of all this cultural appropriation nonsense.

"There seems to be a small matter of people who patrol the internet looking for reasons to be aggrieved and aggravated. That seems to be all their sad lives consist of."

Over on Twitter, viewers blasted the conversation and pointed out two white people had no place in deciding whether certain outfits or hairstyles are culturally offensive.

One said: "WHY ARE WHITE PEOPLE DISCUSSING ADELE AND HER BANTU KNOTS??? #ThisMorning PRODUCERS ARE A DISGRACE."

"#ThisMorning don't know if it's appropriate for four white people to talk about appropriation," added a second.

And a third agreed: "Two white people saying cultural appropriation isn't a thing on #ThisMorning If you're going to have a discussion about cultural appropriation, at least make the effort to have somebody actually involved in the culture."

While a fourth remarked: "Someone get that woman off this morning can't believe she just called black appropriation rubbish #ThisMorning."

You'd think would be a celebration of the culture.

I can get that some people are sensitive but maybe they need to look inside first before opening mouth
