Strange Phoenix introduces 2 pedestrian scramble intersections downtown

    BY KTAR.COM

PHOENIX – Two intersections in downtown Phoenix recently received upgrades to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street.

The City of Phoenix implemented pedestrian scramble intersections at Taylor and 1st streets and Taylor and 3rd streets near the downtown Arizona State University campus.

A pedestrian scramble is an intersection that allows people to cross in any direction, including diagonally, by stopping vehicle traffic in all directions.

“As the fifth largest and fastest growing city in the nation, the installation of two pedestrian scrambles downtown is just one example of how Phoenix is constantly improving our infrastructure through innovation and data,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a press release.

The intersections were chosen because of the high foot traffic in the area.

Phoenix Street Transportation Director Kini Knudson said the intersections are a big step to improving mobility in Phoenix.

“We are always looking at ways to improve our roadways for all users – people walking or jogging, riding bicycles or scooters or driving cars,” Knudson said.

The pedestrian scramble intersections are popular in high population cities like Tokyo or New York City.
