Men are shaving their beards to look like 'monkey tails' in new facial trend

If 2021 hasn't been wacky enough for you already, then you will be glad to hear that there is something else to surprise you.

A new facial hair trend for men has emerged – the monkey tail beard – and it's as random as it sounds.

If you haven't guessed already, the beard is shaped to look like a monkey’s tail as it curls around the wearer’s face.

It starts off as a sideburn, then curves under the chin and around the lip. The facial hair trend is finished off with a bushy moustache.

It's thought the look is created by a bearded man shaving one cheek as well as a little patch below his lip.



With the nation currently in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, many people are cutting their own hair and trying out new looks.

So it may just be the perfect time to experiment with that facial hair.

It also means you can give your friends on FaceTime or colleagues on Zoom a surprise when you present your new facial fuzz.

If the worst comes to worst, you can always shave it off or cover it with a face mask for now.

People have been taking to Twitter to talk about the new trend as they open up about considering it.

One Twitter user known as Matthew wrote: "I'm currently Amish, but have been dared for the monkey tail beard... thoughts?"

A friend replied to him: "Holy s**t. This is amazing. Do it, of course."

While another replied: "I will if you will."

Meanwhile another Twitter user joked: "The next civil war will be waged over people liking that terrible monkey tail beard."

A third chimed in: "Controversial opinion: I enjoy the monkey tail beard trend, appreciate man buns, and think men should, in general, be encouraged to be more playful and expressive, in whatever ways bring them joy."

Although the monkey tail beard is a 2021 facial trend, the style can be traced back to September 2019, when MLB baseball player Mike Fiers trimmed his beard into it.

He said at the time: "They [his teammates] dared me to do it. They didn’t think I’d go out there and pitch with it. I didn’t care."

Fiers didn’t keep the style very long, however it has stuck around in people's memories ever since.
